Private Equity Firms Buying Industrial and Manufacturing Companies

221 firms profiled · Updated October 26, 2026

Manufacturing has long been the backbone of the lower middle market, and it remains one of the most common sectors for private equity buyers. Many of the firms on this page were founded to buy family-owned manufacturers and industrial service companies, and they still do. Renewed interest in making goods in the United States has added to demand, especially for companies that make critical components or serve defense, infrastructure and energy customers.

Buyers vary in what they want. Some prefer engineered products with patents or specifications that make customers reluctant to switch. Others look for contract manufacturers with strong relationships in growing end markets such as aerospace, medical devices or electrical equipment. A third group buys industrial services businesses, such as testing, repair, maintenance and field services, which often carry more recurring revenue than manufacturing alone.

Diligence usually covers customer and end market concentration, gross margin by product line, the ability to raise prices when raw material costs rise, the age and condition of equipment, future capital spending, and the skills and depth of the plant workforce. The environmental condition of owned property and quality certifications such as ISO 9001 or AS9100 come up early. Buyers will also ask how much of the business depends on the owner's own relationships and know-how.

Manufacturing buyers often start with one platform in a niche and then add smaller companies that broaden the product line or add capacity. Owners should ask whether the buyer plans to keep the plant and workforce where they are, whether the business will be combined with others, how the management team will be rewarded, and how much the buyer plans to invest in equipment and automation.

Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help you identify which of these firms are buying manufacturers with your products, customers and size, whether a sale is near or years away.
