What Platinum Equity buys

Platinum Equity is a Beverly Hills, California firm founded by Tom Gores in 1995. It manages about $48 billion, owns roughly 60 companies and has completed more than 550 acquisitions. It buys control of businesses in almost any industry, with a lean toward manufacturing, distribution, equipment rental, technology and media, and it is comfortable with complicated deals such as corporate carve-outs, take-privates and companies that need an operational turnaround. Its in-house operations staff, the core of what it calls M&A&O, works inside each business after closing.

The flagship funds, including the $12.4 billion Fund VI closed in 2024, buy large companies. Smaller owners should look at the Small Cap team, which closed its $2.28 billion Small Cap Fund II in September 2025. That team targets companies with up to $650 million of revenue and up to $50 million of EBITDA in any industry, and it favors founder and family sellers and corporate divisions. Its 2026 buys include Norton Packaging, Tongrun International, Czarnowski Collective, Infratech and LMPG. Platinum's companies also make add-ons, as R&B Wholesale Distributors and PlayPower did in 2026.

Greymont’s take

How Platinum Equity fits a seller

Platinum suits owners of manufacturing, distribution and industrial service businesses, including family companies and corporate divisions, that would benefit from hands-on operating help. Companies with up to $50 million of EBITDA fit its Small Cap fund, which announced three deals in two weeks in January 2026. Founders often keep a stake: Infratech's selling owner and its CEO kept equity, and LMPG's founder and management rolled theirs. Expect Platinum's operations staff to start on its improvement plan from the first day, often working on site for an extended period.

Platinum also moves fast on the sell side. It invested in Motors & Armatures in July 2024, sold the parts division in October 2025 and agreed to sell the last piece, Heat Controller, in June 2026. An owner who rolls equity should ask which fund is buying, what the operations team expects to change in the first year, whether management will stay, and how and when Platinum expects to exit.

Questions owners ask

Does Platinum Equity buy smaller companies?

Yes, through its Small Cap team, which closed the $2.28 billion Small Cap Fund II in September 2025. That team targets companies with up to $650 million of revenue and up to $50 million of EBITDA in any industry, and its 2026 deals include Norton Packaging, Tongrun International, Czarnowski Collective, Infratech and LMPG.

Does Platinum Equity buy family-owned businesses?

Yes. It bought Czarnowski Collective from the founding Nagle family in January 2026, and in July 2026 it agreed to invest in Grand Appliance, a fourth-generation family business, to combine it with R&B Wholesale Distributors. Its Small Cap page lists founder and family sellers first among its deal types.

What kinds of deals does Platinum Equity do?

It buys control and handles complicated situations: founder and family sales, corporate carve-outs such as the Owens & Minor Products & Healthcare Services business it bought in December 2025, private sales, take-privates and special situations. Its portfolio companies also make add-on acquisitions.

What happens after Platinum Equity buys a company?

Platinum's portfolio operations staff start carrying out the plan built during due diligence on the first day, usually with an extended on-site presence, and an operating council of Platinum and company leaders oversees the work. A dedicated sell-side team later looks for the exit, and Platinum sometimes sells a business in pieces, as it did with Motors & Armatures.
