Private Equity Firms Buying Education Companies

61 firms profiled · Updated October 27, 2026

Education businesses attract private equity because demand is steady and families, employers and schools keep spending on learning through most economic cycles. The firms on this page invest across the sector: early childhood centers, private and specialty schools, tutoring and test preparation, trade and career training, workforce and corporate learning, and the software and services that schools and colleges buy.

Each part of the sector has its own buyer logic. Childcare and early education buyers look at enrollment, occupancy, tuition levels, staffing ratios and the condition of centers. Career and trade schools are valued on enrollment trends, completion and job placement rates, accreditation and eligibility for federal student aid. Companies that sell to schools are judged on contract renewals, budget cycles and how deeply their product is built into daily teaching or administration.

Regulation is a large part of diligence in education. Buyers will review licenses and state approvals, accreditation status, compliance with federal student aid rules where they apply, safety and background check records, and any history of complaints. For businesses that depend on government funding or subsidies, buyers will look at how secure that funding is and how quickly it is paid.

Owners in education often care deeply about mission and reputation, so ask how a buyer will protect the quality of teaching or care, whether your leaders and staff will stay, how tuition and pay decisions will be made, and whether the buyer plans to grow by opening new sites or by combining your business with others it owns.

Not every firm here wants full control. Several will take a minority stake and let the current leaders keep running the business. If you want to stay involved, that choice will shape which buyers make sense for you.

Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help you find the firms on this page whose approach fits your mission, whether you want to sell, stay on or bring in a growth partner.
