What Great Hill Partners buys

Great Hill Partners is a Boston growth buyout firm, founded in 1998, with a second office in London. It backs fast-growing companies in five areas: technology, financial services, healthcare, business services and consumer. Its published criteria call for companies past the early stage that are growing at least 15% a year and are worth less than $1.25 billion. It invests $100 million to $750 million per deal and will take either a majority or a minority stake. In September 2025 it closed its ninth fund at $7 billion, well above its $5 billion target, and it has raised more than $19 billion since 1998.

Most of its deals are software and tech-enabled services, but it also owns healthcare providers such as Intuitive Health and Blue Cloud Pediatric Surgery Centers and franchise brands such as Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming. Its check size puts it well above most founder-owned companies. A smaller business is more likely to meet Great Hill as an add-on, as Embold Health and CirrusMD did when they joined Quantum Health.

Greymont’s take

How Great Hill Partners fits a seller

Great Hill suits founders of larger, fast-growing companies who want a growth partner and may not want to sell everything. It takes minority stakes, as with Mission Wealth in May 2025, which stayed majority owned by its employees, and it often invests next to an existing backer, as it did with Garnett Station Partners at Woof Gang. Founders often roll equity and keep running the business, as Peter Park's founding team did in 2025.

The bar is high. The firm wants at least 15% annual growth and invests $100 million or more, so a typical lower middle market business will not fit as a new platform. IT managed services owners should note it built Mission Cloud into a large AWS services provider and sold it to CDW in December 2024. An owner should ask whether a deal would be majority or minority and who the likely next buyer is; recent exits went to CDW, The Access Group and MARI.

Questions owners ask

How big an investment does Great Hill make?

Its published criteria list investments of $100 million to $750 million in companies valued at under $1.25 billion that are growing at least 15% a year. It will take majority or minority positions.

Does Great Hill invest in IT services or managed service providers?

Yes, though most of its technology deals are software. It currently owns Evolve IP, which provides cloud, contact center and managed network services, and it sold AWS managed services provider Mission Cloud to CDW in December 2024.

Will Great Hill take a minority stake?

Yes. Its criteria allow majority or minority stakes, and in May 2025 it made a minority investment in Mission Wealth, a Santa Barbara wealth manager that remains majority owned by its employees.

What is Great Hill's latest fund?

Great Hill Equity Partners IX closed in September 2025 with $7 billion of commitments, beating its $5 billion target. The firm says it has raised more than $19 billion since 1998.
