Private Equity Firms Buying Wealth Management Firms

38 firms profiled · Updated October 26, 2026

Wealth management has been consolidating quickly, and private equity is behind many of the most active buyers. Independent advisory firms earn recurring fees tied to the assets they manage, clients tend to stay for many years, and a large share of advisors are approaching retirement without a clear successor. That combination has drawn buyers that bring capital, technology and back-office support to firms that want to grow or plan a transition.

Most of the buyers on this page back aggregators: firms that acquire advisory practices and bring them onto a shared platform for compliance, investment research, technology and operations. Some let each practice keep its own brand and local identity, while others fold acquired firms into a single national name. A smaller group invests minority capital in a founder-led firm that wants a partner without giving up control.

Buyers focus on the quality of recurring revenue. They look at assets under management and how fees are charged, client ages and how much wealth may pass to heirs who have their own advisors, how many clients are served by each advisor, organic growth from new clients, and how dependent the firm is on its founder. Compliance history and any regulatory issues are reviewed closely, because they follow the firm after a sale.

Deals often combine cash at closing with equity in the buyer's platform and payments tied to keeping clients and growing revenue after the sale. Advisors should ask how much they receive up front, how any earnout is measured, whether their brand, team and investment approach will stay, how clients will be told about the change, and how the next generation of advisors in the firm will be rewarded.

Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help advisory firm owners compare these platforms on structure, independence and culture before any formal conversation begins.
