What Kelso & Company buys
Kelso & Company is a New York private equity firm that has made North American middle-market buyouts since 1980. It was founded on the ideas of Louis Kelso, inventor of the employee stock ownership plan. It says it has raised more than $17 billion across 11 funds and made more than 140 investments. Current holdings cluster in financial and professional services (wealth managers Pathstone, Savant and Wellington-Altus, and advisory firms J.S. Held and WilliamsMarston), distribution (BradyPLUS, Ferraro Foods, Novvia and BDI), consumer brands, industrials and business services such as digital engineering firm Bridgenext.
Kelso mostly buys control but also takes minority stakes, such as its 2025 deal for 25% of Wellington-Altus at nearly C$400 million. Fund XI closed at $3.25 billion in 2023, and Kelso's own people supply about 15% of the capital in its recent funds. It publishes no revenue or EBITDA range. Smaller companies usually meet Kelso as add-ons, as Aaron Packaging's distribution business did with Novvia in 2025, or through partners such as the independent sponsor behind the Galloway engineering platform.

Greymont’s take
How Kelso & Company fits a seller
Kelso suits owners of established services and distribution businesses who want a buyer that shares ownership with management. Its homepage says every Kelso employee invests in its deals, and its Wellington-Altus deal let that firm's advisors and employees, its largest group of shareholders, sell part of their holdings. Owners of architecture and engineering firms should note Galloway: Kelso backed an independent sponsor led by a veteran industry executive and set aside follow-on equity for more acquisitions, so Galloway is a likely buyer of smaller firms in that field.
Kelso's platforms are large. An owner should ask whether the business would be a new platform or an add-on, how much equity management would be offered, and how long Kelso expects to hold it. Accession, bought as Risk Strategies in 2015, was sold in 2025.
Questions owners ask
Does Kelso take minority stakes?
Yes. In October 2025 it agreed to buy a 25% minority stake in Canadian wealth manager Wellington-Altus for nearly C$400 million, a deal that valued the company at more than C$1.5 billion.
What industries does Kelso invest in?
Its investments page sorts holdings into consumer, energy, financial services, healthcare, industrial, media and services. Its deals since mid-2025 were in wealth management, architecture and engineering, industrial distribution, and communications and fire and life safety systems.
How is Kelso connected to employee ownership?
The firm was founded on the ideas of Louis Kelso, who invented the employee stock ownership plan. It says every Kelso employee invests in its deals and that it offers management teams meaningful long-term incentive pay.
Has Kelso sold any companies recently?
Yes. It completed the $9.83 billion sale of Accession Risk Management Group to Brown & Brown in August 2025, and in August 2026 it announced a full exit from Ascensus through a recapitalization led by Stone Point Capital.
