Private Equity Firms Buying IT Services and Managed Service Providers

143 firms profiled · Updated October 26, 2026

Managed service providers sit near the top of many private equity wish lists. Small and mid-sized businesses depend on outside IT support, cybersecurity has become a board-level worry, and a good MSP bills most of its revenue every month under contracts that renew. The market is also very fragmented, with thousands of owner-run firms serving a single metro area, which makes it well suited to building a larger company through acquisitions.

The buyers you will meet are mostly private equity-backed MSP platforms buying add-ons, private equity firms looking for a new platform, and a smaller number of family offices and independent sponsors. Platforms often prefer companies with a clear local footprint and a strong service team, because those are the hardest things to build from scratch.

Buyers judge an MSP on the quality of its recurring revenue more than its total revenue. Expect questions about the share of revenue from monthly managed services compared with projects and hardware resale, how many clients you have and how concentrated revenue is, contract terms and renewal history, gross margin on managed services, security offerings, the tools and vendors you rely on, and how dependent clients are on the owner or one senior engineer. Clean ticket data and documented processes make a real difference in diligence.

Not every buyer on this page limits itself to classic MSPs. Some back IT consulting and implementation firms, field services companies that install and support technology across many locations, cloud hosting providers, and contractors that serve federal, state and local government. Those businesses face similar questions, with more weight on project backlog, certifications, security clearances and the contract vehicles they hold.

For an owner, the shape of the deal matters as much as the price. Many MSP acquisitions include rolled equity in the buyer's platform, and some tie part of the price to client retention after closing. It is worth asking each buyer how it has integrated past acquisitions, whether your team and brand will stay, and what happens to your clients' service levels during the first year.

Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. We can tell you which of the firms below are actively adding MSPs of your size and in your region.
