What Petra Capital Partners buys

Petra Capital Partners is a Nashville firm that has provided growth capital to lower middle market companies since 1996. Unlike most buyout firms, it can put in debt and equity together, using mezzanine loans, preferred stock and common stock, and it is willing to hold either a controlling or a minority position. Its fifth fund, a $270 million fund licensed by the SBA as a small business investment company, finished raising money in January 2025. Petra often backs experienced executives as they launch new platforms, invests alongside other sponsors, and funds acquisitions for companies it already owns.

It looks for US healthcare or business services companies with more than $10 million of revenue, more than $1 million of EBITDA and an enterprise value of $10 million to $75 million, and it usually invests $10 million to $25 million. Healthcare is its largest area, from behavioral health to home care, while recent business services deals include IT services, roofing, restoration and engineering. A company with a few million dollars of EBITDA is well within its range.

Greymont’s take

How Petra Capital Partners fits a seller

Petra fits owners who want growth money but are not ready to give up control, or who want to keep more of the company by mixing debt with equity. Its site says it can often put debt in place before a traditional lender would, which lets current owners hold on to a larger share. Petra also joins deals led by other firms, so a seller may meet it as a co-investor or lender rather than the lead buyer, as with C&D Industrial Maintenance and Liberty Restoration Group in 2025.

Founders often keep a stake. At RD Nutrition in January 2026 the founder stayed on as CEO and kept a meaningful share. An owner should ask how much of Petra's money would come as debt, what that debt costs and when it must be repaid, and who controls the board if Petra holds a minority position.

Questions owners ask

Does Petra Capital Partners take minority stakes?

Yes. Petra says it is comfortable with control or non-control positions. Its listed deal types include minority growth capital, recapitalizations, buyouts and acquisition financing, using mezzanine debt, preferred equity or common equity.

What size company does Petra invest in?

Its criteria call for US companies with more than $10 million of revenue, more than $1 million of EBITDA and an enterprise value between $10 million and $75 million, with investments of $10 million to $25 million.

Does Petra invest in IT services companies?

Yes. IT services, including managed services and cybersecurity, is one of its business services interests. Current holdings include Pivot Point Consulting, a healthcare IT services firm, KCI Telecommunications, and Cre8tive Technology and Design, whose purchase of EpiCenter ERP Petra funded in January 2025.
