Nashville is one of the country's busiest centers for healthcare investing, and that shapes the private equity firms based in Tennessee. Several of them specialize in healthcare services: physician and specialty practices, behavioral health, home-based care and the companies that support providers. Working alongside so many healthcare companies, these firms tend to know the regulations, payers and staffing issues that matter to owners in the field.
Healthcare is not the whole story. Firms in Nashville and Chattanooga also buy industrial, manufacturing and distribution businesses, and Knoxville is home to an investor that backs software companies with its own capital. Sizes vary widely: some firms will look at companies with as little as $1 million of EBITDA, while others focus on larger platforms and reach smaller owners through add-on acquisitions.
Deal structures differ too. Most of these firms buy control and keep the founder involved for a period after closing, some take minority stakes alongside the owner, and at least one offers a mix of growth debt and equity for owners who want capital without selling the company. Knowing which approach a firm uses before the first call saves time for everyone.
Being close to the buyer can help. A firm based in Nashville or Chattanooga can visit the business easily, meet the team and see operations firsthand, and it often already knows the local lenders, accountants and attorneys an owner relies on. For companies across Tennessee and the neighboring states, that familiarity can make early conversations easier and diligence quicker.
Geography should not decide the outcome on its own, though. Every firm here buys outside Tennessee, and plenty of active buyers of Tennessee companies are based in other states. The better questions are whether a firm has bought businesses like yours, at your size, and what happened to the founders and managers after closing.
The profiles below are built to answer those questions. Each one lists the firm's announced deals from the last two years, with dates and links to the source, along with its stated size range and current portfolio, so an owner can quickly see which Tennessee firms are active in their industry.
Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help Tennessee owners compare these firms with national buyers active in the Southeast and find the right fit.
