What Greater Sum Ventures buys

Greater Sum Ventures (GSV) is a Knoxville, Tennessee firm started in 2016 that invests its own money instead of raising outside funds, so no fund deadline forces it to sell. It buys into software companies that serve a single industry, usually still run by their founders, plus a few tech-enabled service businesses, mostly in the lower middle market. Current holdings sell software to therapy and medical practices, property managers, auto repair shops and car dealers, police and corrections agencies, marinas and sports venues. As of September 2025 the firm counted $5.4 billion of assets, more than 300 acquisitions and 24 platforms built.

GSV prefers to own a majority but says it is flexible on structure, and its deals have ranged from $3 million to $3 billion. The company it looks for has a proven product, at least $3 million of annual recurring revenue, few lost customers and room to grow. Smaller software firms often meet GSV as add-ons: Vehlo bought Dealer Pay and Total Customer Connect in 2025, and Tapin2 joined MyVenue in 2026.

Greymont’s take

How Greater Sum Ventures fits a seller

GSV suits founders of software companies that serve one industry and have reached about $3 million of recurring revenue. It invests its own capital, so it has no fund clock, but its record shows it often brings in bigger investors within a few years: Inhabit, Vehlo, Stax and PracticeTek were all recapitalized by other firms, and ProfitSolv, LivTech and Transit Technologies changed hands in 2025. A founder who keeps equity should plan on a second sale and ask how earlier founders fared in it.

GSV says it closes quickly once a letter of intent is signed and likes majority control. Founders of smaller products should ask whether they would join an existing platform such as Vehlo or MyVenue and how much say they would keep. Owners of property management firms or repair shops are not the target; GSV buys the software those businesses run on.

Questions owners ask

Does Greater Sum Ventures invest from a traditional private equity fund?

No. GSV says it is backed by its own capital and has no formal funds, which it says gives it room to choose what it buys, how it structures a deal and when it sells.

What size of software company does GSV look for?

Its stated target is a founder-led software business with a proven product, at least $3 million of annual recurring revenue, low churn and strong revenue retention. It says its deals have ranged from $3 million to $3 billion.

Does GSV buy property management or auto repair businesses?

Not the service businesses themselves. It owns software companies that sell to those industries: Inhabit and PropertyTek serve property managers, and Vehlo sells shop management and payments software to repair shops and dealerships.

Does the founder stay on after GSV invests?

Often, yes. When GSV took a majority stake in MyVenue in May 2025, it said founder and CEO Tim Stollznow and his executive team would keep leading the company.
