Private Equity Firms Buying Healthcare Services Companies

192 firms profiled · Updated October 26, 2026

Healthcare services is one of the broadest and most active areas for private equity. It covers physician and therapy practices, home health and hospice, behavioral health, staffing, outsourced billing and many specialty providers in between. Demand is driven by an aging population and by insurers and health systems looking for lower-cost places to deliver care, which makes well-run independent providers attractive to buyers.

Most of the buyers below build platforms and then add practices or providers in the same specialty or region. A smaller practice will usually join one of those platforms rather than become a new investment on its own. Some firms focus on businesses that sell services to hospitals, insurers and employers rather than to patients, such as billing, coding, staffing or medical transportation. Those carry different risks from direct patient care and are often valued differently.

Healthcare diligence goes deeper than in most sectors. Buyers will look at the mix of commercial insurance, Medicare and Medicaid, reimbursement rates and recent changes to them, billing and coding accuracy, licensing and accreditation, and compliance with the rules on referrals and patient privacy. In physician practices, they will also look at how many providers produce the revenue and how those providers are paid, since that drives both value and deal terms.

Many states limit who can own a medical practice, so deals with physician groups often use a management company structure. The buyer owns the business operations, and an entity owned by physicians employs the clinicians. Owners should ask how that will work for them, what their pay will be after the sale, how much equity they will be asked to roll into the platform, and what non-compete terms the buyer expects.

Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help you work out which of these firms are building platforms in your specialty, and what joining one would mean for you and your providers.
