What Knox Lane buys

Knox Lane is a San Francisco investment firm that backs growth-minded services and consumer businesses, and nearly all of its recent deals have been in services. Current companies include healthcare staffing (All Star Healthcare Solutions and Cross Country Healthcare), healthcare marketing and medical education (Fingerpaint Group, Spectrum Science and HCEsquared), and technician-led services for homes and buildings (Any Hour, Ruppert Landscape, HighGround, Guardian Fire Protection and SAGE Integration). It usually takes a majority stake, keeps a smaller portfolio than most firms, and builds each company through add-on acquisitions.

The firm closed its second fund at its $1 billion hard cap in July 2024 and lists $3.5 billion of assets under management. It does not publish revenue or EBITDA ranges, and its platforms are sizable, from a $437 million take-private to companies bought from other investors. A smaller owner is most likely to meet Knox Lane as an add-on, such as a landscaping company joining Ruppert or a locum tenens staffing firm joining All Star.

Greymont’s take

How Knox Lane fits a seller

Knox Lane suits owners of services businesses with technicians or clinicians in the field, such as landscaping, restoration, fire protection, security integration and healthcare staffing, who want a hands-on partner and are open to a majority sale. Its platform deals have mostly been larger companies bought from other investors or public shareholders, like HighGround from Trivest and Cross Country Healthcare, so most founder-owned firms will meet it through an add-on. Ruppert Landscape bought companies in South Carolina and Florida in January 2025, and All Star bought Integrity Locums that May.

In the HCEsquared deal, leadership kept their roles and invested alongside Knox Lane, which is a useful model to raise in talks. Owners should also ask whether their local brand will survive, since HighGround runs a family of local names, and how long Knox Lane expects to hold the platform before its next sale.

Questions owners ask

What kinds of businesses does Knox Lane invest in?

Services and consumer companies, with a recent tilt toward services. Current holdings include healthcare staffing, healthcare marketing and medical education, home services, landscaping, water and fire damage restoration, fire protection and security systems integration.

Does Knox Lane buy majority stakes?

Usually. It took majority stakes in HighGround Restoration Group in March 2025 and SAGE Integration in September 2026, and in July 2026 it completed a $437 million all-cash take-private of Cross Country Healthcare.

Will Knox Lane look at a smaller company?

Mostly as an add-on. By mid-2024 Knox Lane counted about 40 add-on acquisitions across eight platforms, and recent ones include landscaping companies bought by Ruppert and a locum tenens firm bought by All Star.

Does management stay after Knox Lane invests?

It varies. HCEsquared's leadership kept their roles and invested alongside Knox Lane in March 2025, while at Cross Country Healthcare the co-founder retired at closing and a new CEO took over.
