What Kinderhook Industries buys

Kinderhook is a New York firm that has raised more than $11 billion since 2003 and buys companies in three areas: environmental and industrial services (waste collection and recycling, compactor and equipment rental), healthcare services, and light manufacturing, which for Kinderhook includes the automotive aftermarket and collision repair. It takes control positions and grows each platform through a long run of add-on acquisitions. The firm counts more than 500 investments and add-ons since it started.

It invests from two pools. Fund 8, a $2.75 billion fund closed in 2024, backs its larger platforms. The $1.1 billion Strategic Opportunities Fund I, closed in April 2026, backs smaller versions of the same playbook in the lower middle market. Kinderhook does not publish revenue or EBITDA minimums. A smaller company is most likely to meet Kinderhook as an add-on to one of its existing platforms, such as Compactor Rentals of America, Apex Waste Solutions or Kaizen Collision.

Greymont’s take

How Kinderhook Industries fits a seller

For owners of waste hauling, recycling, compactor rental or collision repair businesses, Kinderhook is one of the most active buyers in the country. Most of its deals are add-ons, so a sale usually means joining a platform Kinderhook already owns rather than becoming a new one. That tends to make the process quicker, because the platform already knows the market and has done many similar deals.

Owners who want to keep running the business can point to the July 2026 Pete & Pete deal, where the founding family stayed on to lead day-to-day operations. Because Kinderhook plans each platform with an eventual sale in mind, and says most of its exits have gone to strategic buyers, an owner who rolls equity into the deal should ask how long the firm expects to hold the platform and who the likely next buyer is.

Questions owners ask

Does Kinderhook buy waste and environmental services companies?

Yes. Environmental and industrial services is one of its three core sectors. Its January 2026 announcement called the Ecowaste Solutions deal its 159th acquisition in that area, and its current waste platforms include Compactor Rentals of America, Apex Waste Solutions, Ecowaste Solutions and Pete & Pete.

Will Kinderhook look at a smaller company?

Often, yes, as an add-on to one of its existing platforms; its stated approach is to buy small and buy often. In April 2026 it also closed a $1.1 billion fund aimed at lower middle market platforms, which are smaller versions of its flagship investments.

Does the owner stay on after Kinderhook invests?

Kinderhook describes management as the starting point of every investment, and it often partners with founders. In the July 2026 Pete & Pete acquisition, the founder and his leadership team stayed on to run day-to-day operations.

Who does Kinderhook usually sell its companies to?

Its investment philosophy says the large majority of its exits have been to strategic buyers. Recent sales include Kingwire to OmniCable in August 2026 and Vehicle Accessories to RealTruck in March 2025.
