Buyers by sector
Waste and environmental services have attracted a steady stream of private equity capital because the work does not stop in a downturn. Trash still needs collecting, containers still need emptying, and specialty waste from hospitals, factories and job sites still has to be handled under strict rules. Much of the industry is still owned by families and founders, which gives buyers a long list of companies to approach.
Buyers range from large private equity firms building national or regional platforms to smaller funds backing specialty niches such as liquid waste, medical waste, construction and demolition debris, portable sanitation and compactor or container rental. Many acquisitions are add-ons: a platform buys a local hauler or service company to add routes, customers and permits in a new market.
Buyers look hardest at route density, the mix of commercial, residential and municipal customers, how many customers are under contract, the age and condition of the fleet and containers, and whether the company controls its own disposal through a transfer station, recycling facility or landfill. In specialty waste, permits, safety records and compliance history can matter as much as revenue. Capital spending on trucks and equipment is part of every valuation conversation.
For an owner, preparation pays off. Accurate records of fleet age and maintenance, customer contracts and permit status make diligence faster and protect the price. It is worth asking each buyer how it treats family members who work in the business, whether drivers and routes stay as they are, and whether any part of the price depends on future results.
Timing works in an owner's favor here. Large waste platforms buy steadily year after year, so an owner who is not ready now will usually find buyers later as well. That leaves room to fix the issues a buyer would otherwise price in: replacing the oldest trucks, putting key customers on written contracts, and renewing permits before they come due.
Greymont works on the buy side and is paid by buyers, never by owners. We can tell you which of the firms below are buying companies like yours, in your region and at your size.
