What Aurora Capital Partners buys

Aurora Capital Partners is a Los Angeles private equity firm, started in 1991, that manages about $6 billion. It buys established US middle market companies in three groups: services for industrial and business customers, technology sold to industrial users, and software or tech-enabled services. Current examples include standby generator service (GenServe), medical waste collection and disposal (Sharps Medical Waste Services), litigation support (First Legal), specialty lubricants (Lubrication Engineers) and software for schools and government (Softdocs).

Aurora is a larger buyer than most firms in this directory. Its strategy page says it usually looks at businesses worth $100 million to $500 million and invests $50 million to $300 million of equity in each, with modest debt. It only backs the existing management team, and those managers usually invest alongside it. Its companies make about six acquisitions each on average. The newest fund, Aurora Equity Partners VII, closed above $2.1 billion in September 2025. A smaller company is most likely to meet Aurora as an add-on, the way four generator service firms joined GenServe in October 2026.

Greymont’s take

How Aurora Capital Partners fits a seller

Aurora suits owners of sizable, well-run service or industrial businesses who want to keep leading the company after a sale. The firm only invests behind the current management team, and those managers usually put their own money into the deal, so an owner who stays on should expect to roll part of the proceeds into the new company rather than take a clean exit. Inc. put Aurora on its 2024 list of founder-friendly investors, and the firm says it backed seven founder-led companies from 2016 to 2024.

For most smaller owners, the realistic route is selling to an Aurora platform. GenServe, Lubrication Engineers and Universal Pure have all bought companies or assets since early 2025. Owners should ask how the platform will fold in their staff and customers, and how long Aurora expects to hold the platform before it sells.

Questions owners ask

Does Aurora Capital Partners buy waste or environmental services companies?

Yes. It owns Sharps Medical Waste Services, which collects, treats and disposes of medical waste for healthcare providers across the US, and Impact Environmental Group, which supplies replacement parts and services for commercial waste containers. Aurora called its 2022 Sharps Compliance purchase its fifth investment in medical waste.

How large a company does Aurora buy?

Its strategy page says it usually targets businesses valued at $100 million to $500 million and invests $50 million to $300 million of equity in each one. Smaller companies usually join as add-ons to one of its existing platforms.

Does management stay after Aurora invests?

Aurora says it only invests behind the existing management team, that those managers usually buy a meaningful stake alongside the firm, and that it leaves day-to-day operations in their hands.

What is Aurora's latest fund?

Aurora Equity Partners VII closed in September 2025 with more than $2.1 billion of commitments, the largest fund in the firm's history. It invests in US middle market business services, industrial services and tech-enabled services companies.
