Private Equity Firms Buying Transportation and Logistics Companies

65 firms profiled · Updated October 27, 2026

Transportation and logistics businesses keep goods moving, and private equity buyers are drawn to the ones that do it well with relatively little capital. Freight brokers, third-party logistics providers, warehouse operators, final-mile delivery companies and specialized carriers all appear on this page, along with fleet maintenance and other transportation services businesses.

Buyers separate asset-light businesses from asset-heavy ones. A freight broker or logistics manager uses other companies' trucks and earns a margin on each load, which needs little capital. A carrier with its own trucks and drivers can earn steady contract revenue but needs constant investment in equipment. Most private equity buyers prefer asset-light models, contract logistics with long-term customers, or specialized niches such as temperature-controlled, hazardous or oversized freight.

Diligence covers customer concentration and contract terms, how revenue held up through the freight downturn of recent years, driver recruiting and turnover, safety scores and insurance claims, how fuel costs are passed through to customers, and the age and condition of trucks and trailers. For warehouse businesses, buyers will look at lease terms, customer contracts and the technology used to manage inventory.

Owners should ask how a buyer will handle the relationships that drive the business, since key customer and carrier relationships often sit with a few people. Ask whether your terminals and staff will stay, whether the buyer plans to combine you with another company it owns, and how much of the price depends on future performance.

It is also worth asking how the buyer thinks about freight cycles. A firm that has owned transportation businesses through a downturn will judge your results more fairly than one that has only seen strong markets.

Technology is a growing part of the conversation. Buyers increasingly ask how loads are tracked, how quotes are priced and how much manual work sits behind each shipment, because better systems are often where they plan to add value after closing.

Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help you sort these firms by the logistics models they actually buy, so you only spend time with buyers that fit your customers and size.
