What BBH Capital Partners buys
BBH Capital Partners Private Equity (BBHCP) is the private equity arm of Brown Brothers Harriman, the New York private bank founded in 1818. It backs lower middle market companies in North America and specializes in being the first outside equity partner for family, founder or management-owned businesses. Typical investments run $50 million to $150 million, more with co-investors, in companies worth up to $750 million. The team manages about $3.0 billion of committed capital and focuses on business products and services, healthcare, and technology, media and telecom.
BBHCP can buy control, with founders keeping a meaningful stake, or take a minority position so the family keeps economic control. It usually buys structured equity and sometimes lends subordinated debt, and one deal can combine partial liquidity for the owner, growth or acquisition capital, and debt paydown. It wants essential products or services with recurring revenue and strong free cash flow. Current holdings include Quest Technology Management, an IT managed services firm, a Southeast HVAC and plumbing platform, and Wolter, a material handling dealer.

Greymont’s take
How BBH Capital Partners fits a seller
BBHCP suits family and founder owners who want an institutional partner for the first time but are not ready to hand over the whole company. Its minority option lets a family keep economic control while taking some money off the table, and in control deals the founders keep a meaningful stake. The Granite Group shows the usual path: the Condron family brought BBHCP in as its first outside equity partner in 2021, the company added more than 35 net new branches, and BBHCP exited in 2026 when Granite agreed to be acquired by Watsco.
Because BBHCP usually invests through structured equity, an owner should ask how that security works, including any preferred return or redemption terms, and what happens to the family's stake at exit. It is also worth asking which BBH banking and advisory relationships come with the deal, since the firm presents that network as a main benefit.
Questions owners ask
Does BBH Capital Partners take minority stakes?
Yes. BBHCP completes both control and non-control deals. It pitches its minority structure to private owners who need capital but want to keep economic control of the business while using BBH's capital and network.
How big are BBHCP's investments?
BBHCP targets investments of $50 million to $150 million in companies with enterprise values up to $750 million, and it can go substantially larger alongside co-investors and its limited partners. It does not publish a minimum EBITDA.
Does BBHCP invest in IT services companies?
Yes. Its current portfolio includes Quest Technology Management, a Roseville, California outsourced IT provider focused on cybersecurity, disaster recovery, cloud infrastructure and unified communications. Technology, media and telecom is one of its three focus areas.
What kind of owners does BBHCP usually partner with?
Family, founder and management-owned companies, where it aims to be the first institutional equity partner. The Granite Group, a third-generation family distributor, took BBHCP as its first outside investor and was sold to Watsco in 2026.
