Private Equity Firms in New York

110 firms profiled · Updated October 27, 2026

New York is home to more private equity firms than almost anywhere else, from the largest global funds to small teams focused on a single sector. For an owner, that concentration is useful: many of the most active buyers of founder-owned businesses are a train ride away, and many of them invest nationwide, not just in the Northeast.

Being based in New York says little about what a firm buys. Some firms on this page focus on services businesses such as waste, healthcare or home services; others buy manufacturers, distributors or software companies. Size criteria vary just as widely, from smaller funds that buy companies with a couple of million dollars of EBITDA to large funds that rarely look below $25 million.

What a New York buyer does offer is proximity for owners in the region. Meetings, site visits and the many small conversations that make up a sale are easier when the buyer is close by, and firms that already own companies in the Northeast often know the local labor market, customers and regulations well.

For an owner in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania, it is worth looking at both groups: the local firms below, and national firms that have bought companies in the region. The right buyer is the one whose strategy, size range and approach fit your business, wherever it is based.

New York firms also vary in how they find companies. Some buy mainly through investment bank auctions; others prefer to meet owners directly, long before a sale, and build a relationship over time. For an owner who values discretion, a firm that works directly and patiently can be a better fit than one that only appears when a business is formally for sale.

Greymont works with owners across New York and is paid by buyers, never by owners. We can tell you which of these firms fit your sector, size and goals.
