What American Industrial Partners buys
American Industrial Partners, usually called AIP, is a New York private equity firm that focuses entirely on the industrial economy. It manages about $17.8 billion and names twelve target areas, among them aerospace and defense, building products, capital equipment, chemicals, distribution, industrial services, metals and mining, packaging and forest products, medical devices, and transportation. Its press releases say it buys established businesses with more than $500 million of sales, through corporate carve-outs, management buyouts, recapitalizations and take-privates of public companies. Recent examples are International Paper's pulp business, PPG's North American paint business and Avanos Medical.
AIP is a hands-on owner. It leans on a team of engineers and operators who set an operating plan at each company to lift earnings, and it counts more than 145 platform and add-on acquisitions since it began. A founder-owned company is far too small to be an AIP platform, so the realistic route is a sale to one of its portfolio companies. RelaDyne, its lubricants and fuel distributor, keeps buying family-owned regional distributors, such as Dennis Oil in Missouri and Rossee Oil in Georgia.

Greymont’s take
How American Industrial Partners fits a seller
AIP is not a direct buyer for most founder-owned businesses. Its platforms are big corporate divisions and public companies, and its stated floor is more than $500 million of sales. Where it matters to a smaller owner is through its portfolio companies. RelaDyne alone closed at least seven purchases of regional lubricant and fuel distributors between June 2025 and September 2026, several of them family businesses that were founded generations ago, and AIP's count of more than 145 platform and add-on deals shows its other companies buy too.
An owner approached by one of these companies is really selling to a strategic buyer with AIP behind it. Two questions are worth asking early: how the business will be merged into the platform's branches and systems, and what AIP's operating plan means for local managers and staff after closing.
Questions owners ask
How big does a company need to be for American Industrial Partners?
AIP's press releases describe its targets as established businesses with sales above $500 million. Recent platforms fit that profile: Global Cellulose Fibers had about $2.3 billion of revenue, and Avanos Medical was valued at about $1.27 billion.
Can a smaller company sell to an AIP business?
Yes, mainly as an add-on. RelaDyne, an AIP portfolio company, bought seven regional lubricant and fuel distributors between June 2025 and September 2026, including Dennis Oil, Chart Distribution Group and Rossee Oil.
What kinds of deals does AIP do?
Corporate carve-outs are its trademark. In the last two years it bought businesses from International Paper, PPG, AGCO and Honeywell and took Avanos Medical private. Its releases say it also does management buyouts and recapitalizations.
