What AEA Investors buys

AEA Investors is a New York firm that the Rockefeller, Mellon and Harriman families set up with S.G. Warburg & Co. in 1968, and it now manages about $19 billion. Three private equity teams matter to owners. AEA Enterprise, called AEA Small Business Private Equity until April 2026, buys lower middle market companies with $5 million to $40 million of EBITDA and enterprise values under $400 million, investing $50 million to $250 million of equity in North America and Europe. The Middle Market team targets industrial and industrial services companies with $25 million to $200 million of EBITDA. AEA Elevate, formerly AEA Growth, puts $50 million to $150 million into tech-enabled business, IT and healthcare services firms.

A separate private debt group lends to companies owned by other sponsors. For most founders AEA Enterprise is the door: it says more than 70% of its companies are founder-owned or led, it pushes employee ownership, and its platforms buy smaller firms, as Meritus Gas Partners did with Greens Welding Supply in March 2026.

Greymont’s take

How AEA Investors fits a seller

AEA is a strong fit for owners of established businesses with at least $5 million of EBITDA in industrial services, distribution, transportation, IT managed services or consumer services such as car washes. Recent AEA Enterprise deals show the pattern: at Magna5 the management team reinvested alongside AEA, and Splash Car Wash was bought from another investor. Owners of smaller companies can still reach AEA by selling to one of its platforms. Meritus Gas Partners, for example, says it lets the distributors it buys stay independent and invites their owners to invest in the holding company.

Because AEA Enterprise puts weight on employee ownership, an owner should ask how much equity managers and staff would receive and how rolled equity is treated. With several AEA teams and a debt arm under one roof, it is also worth asking which team would lead the deal and how long that fund expects to hold the company.

Questions owners ask

Is AEA's small business private equity strategy still active?

Yes. In April 2026 AEA renamed it AEA Enterprise and said the strategy and team are unchanged. It targets companies with $5 million to $40 million of EBITDA, and its fifth fund closed at more than $1.3 billion in October 2023.

Does AEA buy IT services or managed service providers?

Yes. In February 2026 AEA Enterprise took a majority stake in Magna5, a managed IT, cybersecurity and cloud provider, and in March 2026 AEA Elevate invested in Trinamix, which implements and manages Oracle Cloud software.

Does AEA invest in car washes or auto services?

Yes. AEA Enterprise bought a majority stake in Splash Car Wash, which has more than 65 sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont, in April 2025. It also lists National Carwash Solutions among its past success stories.

Will AEA take a minority stake?

AEA Elevate invests as either a majority or minority owner, writing checks of $50 million to $150 million in tech-enabled business and healthcare services. The AEA Enterprise fund raised in 2023 said it would generally make control investments.
