Private Equity Firms Buying Auto Service and Collision Repair Companies

62 firms profiled · Updated October 27, 2026

Private equity has been consolidating automotive services for years: collision repair, mechanical repair and maintenance, oil change and tire shops, auto glass, car washes, towing and recovery, fleet repair, driver-assistance calibration, and the parts and equipment businesses that support them. Cars on the road are getting older and more complex to repair, insurers prefer to work with larger networks, and most shops are still owned by individuals or families. That combination gives buyers a long runway of acquisitions.

Most of the buyers you will meet are private equity-backed platforms that buy individual shops or small groups and fold them into a regional or national network. Some private equity firms also back newer platforms that are still building their first markets, and a few family offices and strategic operators buy as well.

In collision repair, buyers look closely at relationships with insurance carriers, including direct repair programs, along with OEM certifications, technician headcount and tenure, cycle time and the shop's capacity. In mechanical service and car washes, they focus on car counts, membership or fleet programs, location quality and whether the business can run without the owner at the counter. Towing and fleet repair businesses are judged on their contracts with motor clubs, police departments, insurers and fleet owners. Real estate is often a separate conversation: whether you own the building, and whether you would sell it or lease it to the buyer.

For an owner, the key questions are about people and brand. Will your technicians and managers stay? Will the shop keep its name and its community reputation? How will the change of ownership affect insurer and OEM approvals? Buyers who have done many of these deals can explain how they handle each one.

Multi-shop operators have more options than single-location owners. A group of shops in one metro area can attract buyers looking for a new platform, while a single well-run shop is usually an add-on to a network that already operates nearby. Knowing which you are helps set expectations on price, deal structure and your role after the sale.

Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. We can tell you which of the firms below are actively adding shops of your size and in your area.
