What Greybull Stewardship buys

Greybull Stewardship is a Jackson, Wyoming firm that Mason Myers founded in 2010 to invest in what it calls the pre-middle market: US companies with $5 million to $50 million of revenue, EBITDA under $5 million and a clear chance to grow. It prefers a majority stake with management keeping a significant share, but will take a minority position in some cases. Its deals include buyouts, growth capital, shareholder liquidity and recapitalizations, and its focus industries are business services, education, franchising, manufacturing and software.

Greybull invests through two kinds of funds. Its evergreen fund, Greybull Stewardship LP, has no end date, and its first closed-end fund, Greybull Stewardship II LP, closed at its $100 million hard cap in June 2023, with money from foundations, family offices and funds of funds. The partners say they are the largest individual investors in their own funds. Greybull says its average hold is about eight years, and its in-house operators help portfolio companies with finance, technology, sales and operations.

Greymont’s take

How Greybull Stewardship fits a seller

Greybull is one of the few institutional buyers that aims at companies earning under $5 million of EBITDA, so it suits owners who are too small for most private equity firms but want both capital and hands-on help from operators. Its long holds, about eight years on average, and its evergreen fund make it a reasonable fit for a founder who wants to stay involved rather than face a quick resale. It is building a textile recycling group around Reclaimed Textiles, Clothes Bin and, since October 2026, Mid-West Textile, and in 2025 it bought VSSTA, which provides ADAS calibration for collision shops.

An owner should ask which fund would own the company, the evergreen fund or the closed-end fund, and what that means for the timing of any later sale. Because Greybull prefers management to own a significant share, also ask how much equity you would be expected to keep.

Questions owners ask

What size company does Greybull Stewardship buy?

Its criteria call for US companies with $5 million to $50 million of revenue, under $5 million of EBITDA and a significant growth opportunity, a range it calls the pre-middle market.

Does Greybull invest in recycling companies?

Yes, in textile recycling. It owns Reclaimed Textiles and Clothes Bin, Reclaimed Textiles bought Dallas recycler United-Southern Waste Material in January 2025, and Greybull acquired El Paso's Mid-West Textile in October 2026.

How long does Greybull hold its companies?

In a November 2024 interview posted on its site, Mason Myers said the average hold is about eight years, some companies have been held for 11 years, and the firm has no required exit timeline.

Does Greybull take minority stakes?

Sometimes. Its preference is majority ownership with management holding a significant share, but its stated criteria say a minority investment is possible in certain situations.
