What GCP Capital Partners buys

GCP Capital Partners is a New York private equity firm that started in 2000 as the merchant banking arm of Greenhill & Co. and has run on its own since 2009. Its funds have put about $2.0 billion into more than 70 companies. It works in two areas: tech-enabled business services, such as software, marketing technology, data, insurance services, legal services and IT services, and financial services and technology, such as payments, community banks and insurance. It will take control or a meaningful minority stake, and it likes companies at a turning point, often after venture funding but before an IPO or a larger buyout.

The stated target is a lower middle market company with $2 million to $25 million of operating profit. GCP usually invests $10 million to $50 million per deal in companies valued at roughly $25 million to $250 million, and it says it will go smaller or larger in some cases. A small insurance agency is most likely to meet GCP through ALKEME, its California brokerage platform, which buys agencies across the country every quarter.

Greymont’s take

How GCP Capital Partners fits a seller

GCP suits owners of business services, insurance or financial technology companies who want a backer that can take either control or a sizable minority stake and then pay for growth through acquisitions. ALKEME shows how that works: GCP has backed the brokerage since it was formed in 2020, and ALKEME has completed more than 95 acquisitions since then. An agency owner who sells to ALKEME joins a national platform and deals with ALKEME's team rather than with GCP directly.

GCP calls itself a patient, long-term investor. In June 2025 it used a continuation vehicle to keep control of ALKEME longer than a normal fund life would allow. It also invests alongside other firms, as it did with TZP Group in the 2025 Superscapes deal. An owner should ask whether GCP wants control or a minority stake, and which other investors would share the board.

Questions owners ask

What size company does GCP Capital Partners look for?

Its criteria call for $2 million to $25 million of operating profit and investments of $10 million to $50 million, with portfolio companies valued at about $25 million to $250 million. It says it will consider earlier-stage companies in some sectors.

Does GCP buy insurance agencies?

Mostly through ALKEME Insurance, the brokerage platform it controls. ALKEME announced 23 agency acquisitions in four quarterly updates between January and October 2026, covering states from Hawaii to New Jersey.

Does GCP take minority stakes?

Yes. It makes both control and influential minority investments. In September 2026, for example, it took part in a $34 million equity raise for Fieldpoint Private, a Connecticut private bank, in a round led by another investor.

Has GCP invested in landscaping or other field services?

Yes. In April 2025 GCP and TZP Group completed a majority recapitalization of Superscapes, a commercial landscaping company that serves HOAs, apartment communities and commercial properties in Texas and Arkansas.
