What Long Point Capital buys

Long Point Capital is a New York private equity firm, founded in 1998 with a second office in the Detroit area, that invests in companies owned by founders, families or managers. Its main focus is professional services, especially engineering, architecture and related consulting. It also looks at niche manufacturing and distribution businesses in North America when the fit is right, and it avoids companies with heavy technology risk, commodity price swings or tight regulation.

For a new platform it wants more than $5 million of EBITDA, with typical companies at $5 million to $30 million, deal values of $20 million to $200 million and $10 million to $50 million of equity. Add-ons can be any size. Its usual deal is a recapitalization: owners take a large amount of cash up front and keep a stake for a second sale later. It also offers management buyouts, generational handoffs and a combined private equity and ESOP deal meant to cut the seller's capital gains tax. Smaller firms most often meet Long Point as add-ons for BKF Engineers or Allnorth Consultants.

Greymont’s take

How Long Point Capital fits a seller

Long Point suits owners of engineering, architecture and consulting firms who want to take money off the table but stay involved. In its typical deal the owners sell a majority, keep a meaningful stake and keep running the business, and Long Point helps them grow through acquisitions before a later sale. It has sold past companies to private equity firms, strategic buyers and employee stock ownership plans. In May 2026 it merged MNS Engineers into BKF Engineers, paying out MNS investors while keeping its stake in the larger firm.

Owners who care about employees or taxes should ask about the private equity plus ESOP structure, which Long Point says can sharply reduce capital gains tax. They should also ask which fund the money would come from, since the last fund the firm announced closed in 2014, and how long it expects to hold.

Questions owners ask

What size company does Long Point look for?

For a new platform it wants more than $5 million of EBITDA, a deal value of $20 million to $200 million and an equity check of $10 million to $50 million. Its 2026 releases describe typical platforms as having $5 million to $30 million of EBITDA. Add-ons can be any size.

Is Long Point buying engineering firms now?

Yes. BKF Engineers, its Western US civil engineering platform, bought Lotus Water in April 2026 and says it wants more engineering, surveying, planning and construction management firms in the West with at least $2 million of EBITDA.

Can Long Point help sell a company to its employees?

Yes. It offers ESOP financing and a combined private equity and ESOP recapitalization, and its portfolio pages show it sold Atlantic Plywood and Sunbury Textile Mills to newly formed ESOPs in two-step transactions.

Does the owner keep a stake after a Long Point deal?

Usually. Its BKF and Allnorth investments were majority recapitalizations in which the selling shareholders kept a meaningful ownership interest, and its criteria call for managers who plan to keep running the business with continuing equity.
