What Oak Hill Capital buys

Oak Hill Capital is a New York private equity firm that started in 1986 as the family office of investor Robert M. Bass. It says it has raised more than $25 billion of fund commitments and co-investments since then. It invests by theme in three areas: digital infrastructure, meaning fiber internet providers and data centers; financial services, mainly insurance brokerage and wealth management; and essential services for businesses and households, such as packaging, engineering and consulting, residential HVAC and plumbing, garage door repair and veterinary care. Most of its companies are in North America.

Oak Hill usually leads control-oriented deals. When it closed its fifth fund in 2021, it said it aims to put $100 million to $400 million of equity into each company, and its sixth fund made its tenth investment in April 2026. It also takes minority stakes, as it did in the 2026 IMA Financial Group recapitalization. A smaller company is most likely to meet Oak Hill as an add-on to one of its platforms, such as Guild Garage Group.

Greymont’s take

How Oak Hill Capital fits a seller

Oak Hill is a buyer for owners of larger, established service businesses rather than small companies looking for their first outside investor. Its typical new company can anchor one of its themes and take in $100 million or more of equity. For smaller owners, the realistic route is a sale to an Oak Hill platform. Guild Garage Group added garage door companies in Michigan, North Carolina and Colorado in the months after Oak Hill invested, and its model lets local owners keep running their own brands.

Oak Hill often leaves founders and managers with real ownership. Guild's management and local operators stayed significant shareholders, and Socket Telecom's co-founder moved to the board. An owner who rolls equity into a deal should ask how long Oak Hill plans to hold the platform, since it has recently sold or partly sold businesses such as Metronet and Trinity Consultants to larger buyers.

Questions owners ask

How large a company does Oak Hill Capital invest in?

Oak Hill does not publish revenue or EBITDA limits. When it closed its fifth fund in January 2021, it said it targets control-oriented equity investments of $100 million to $400 million in middle market companies, mostly in North America.

Does Oak Hill buy home services and other essential services companies?

Yes. Essential services is one of its three investment themes. Current holdings include Wrench Group (residential HVAC and plumbing), American Veterinary Group and Guild Garage Group, a garage door service network it invested in on April 1, 2026.

Does Oak Hill take minority stakes?

Sometimes. In May 2026 it took a minority position in IMA Financial Group's recapitalization, which kept the broker majority employee owned. It also stayed on as a minority owner of Kestra Holdings when Stone Point agreed to buy control in October 2024.
