What GrowthCurve Capital buys

GrowthCurve Capital is a New York private equity firm started in 2021 by Sumit Rajpal, who previously co-led the Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division. It takes control positions, writing equity checks of about $100 million to $300 million or more, in companies with roughly $25 million to $100 million of revenue. Its three sectors are financial services, healthcare, and technology and information services. It looks for businesses that own valuable data, benefit from network effects or are protected by things like regulation or being mission-critical to customers, and then puts its own AI, product, engineering and talent teams to work on growth.

The firm reports more than $3 billion of assets under management and seven platform companies, mostly software and data businesses such as Duetto, Netchex, PlanHub and PureFacts, plus Brightway Insurance and Revecore. It closed its first fund at $1.4 billion in June 2023. A company below its revenue floor is most likely to meet GrowthCurve as an add-on to one of those platforms, as HotStats, FLYR Hospitality and GlobalGreen Insurance did.

Greymont’s take

How GrowthCurve Capital fits a seller

GrowthCurve fits a founder or management team running a data-rich software or tech-enabled services company with at least $25 million of revenue that wants a control buyer with deep technical resources. Its pitch is hands-on product, data and AI work rather than financial engineering alone. Some of its deals are bought from other investors, such as PlanHub, bought from Mainsail Partners, which kept a minority stake.

For most lower middle market owners, the realistic path is an add-on sale to a GrowthCurve company. Recent examples include an insurance agency franchise network joining Brightway and hotel data and pricing businesses joining Duetto. An owner should ask which platform would be the buyer, how the business would be folded in, and whether GrowthCurve's own team or the platform's managers lead the deal.
