What Branford Castle Partners buys
Branford Castle Partners, based in New York City and Boca Raton, has bought lower middle market companies since 1986. It takes control of profitable North American companies that lead a niche market, with $2 million to $15 million of EBITDA and an enterprise value of up to $150 million. Most of its current portfolio is specialty manufacturing, such as test instruments, aerospace and defense equipment and pipeline safety products. Its criteria also cover distribution, business services, hobby and wellness products, and multi-site healthcare such as dental groups.
The firm buys from founders and families, carves divisions out of larger companies, and buys from other private equity owners. It insists on control but asks owners and managers to roll some equity. It manages about $500 million across three funds. Fund II, a $205 million 2021 fund, made what it called its likely final platform in January 2025, and Fund III is raising toward $300 million. A smaller company can still fit as an add-on, since Branford looks at add-ons with $1 million or more of EBITDA.

Greymont’s take
How Branford Castle Partners fits a seller
Branford fits the owner of a profitable niche manufacturer, distributor or specialty services company who is ready to sell control but wants to keep some equity and keep the management team in place. In its three most recent platform deals, Hoffman Engineering, Testek Solutions and Eastern Dental, the existing CEO and team stayed on, and the firm says it works mainly at the board level after closing. Those three businesses came from a corporate parent or another private equity owner, so founder sales are only one part of its deal flow. Holds vary: the firm described Clean Solutions Group as a four-year hold, while Vitrek stayed in the portfolio for more than eight years. Because Fund II says it has made its last platform, an owner should ask whether a new deal would be funded from Fund III and how much capital Branford would set aside for add-ons.
Questions owners ask
What size company does Branford Castle buy?
Its acquisition criteria ask for $2 million to $15 million of EBITDA and an enterprise value of up to $150 million for a new platform. For add-ons to a company it already owns, it will look at businesses with $1 million or more of EBITDA.
Does Branford Castle buy founder-owned businesses?
Yes. Its About page lists founder and family-owned companies alongside corporate carve-outs and companies bought from other private equity firms. It requires a controlling stake but encourages prior owners and managers to reinvest equity.
Is Branford Castle still making new platform investments?
Its January 2025 Eastern Dental release called that deal the eighth and likely last platform for Fund II. The About page shows Fund III, a 2026 vintage with a $300 million target, now investing, and Marubeni committed to the new flagship fund in March 2026.
Which industries does Branford Castle focus on?
Industrial and manufacturing companies make up most of its active portfolio, from aviation test equipment to pipeline safety products. Its criteria also name value-added distribution, business services, consumer hobby and wellness products, and healthcare such as dental and veterinary.
