What Tinicum buys
Tinicum is a New York firm, founded in 1974 by Derald Ruttenberg, that buys controlling stakes in industrial companies and intends to own them for a very long time. It manages $5.2 billion, mostly from families and individuals, through Tinicum L.P., a vehicle with no set end date, and it cites a 25-year investment horizon. Its main areas are engineered products (aerospace, defense, medical and electronic components, fasteners, flow control and thermal management), industrial distribution and services, industrial software and technology, and specialty infrastructure.
Its target equity investment is $50 million to $500 million, so its platforms are sizable. Recent purchases include Leggett & Platt's aerospace business for $285 million and, with Blackstone, the London-listed Senior plc. Sellers can sell all of the company or keep a share, and management is offered equity in every company Tinicum controls. A smaller manufacturer or distributor is most likely to meet Tinicum as an add-on to a holding such as PennAero, KGM, Aeronix or Senior AeroFlow, each of which says it is looking for complementary acquisitions.

Greymont’s take
How Tinicum fits a seller
Tinicum fits a family or founder who cares about what happens to the company after the sale. It says it buys to hold indefinitely, uses debt with caution, and lets sellers either sell out or keep a share and stay in management. Its site says 10 of its 13 core private holdings were bought in partnership with founders and families, and at Tornatech in October 2024 the second-generation owners kept a minority stake and stayed on as co-presidents.
The hurdle for most owners is size. With a $50 million minimum equity check, a smaller company will usually be bought by one of the firm's platforms rather than become a new one. An owner should ask which platform would own the business, how much freedom acquired companies keep, and how a retained minority stake can later be cashed out, since Tinicum says it offers partners liquidity at appropriate intervals rather than on a fixed date.
Questions owners ask
How long does Tinicum keep the companies it buys?
It says it looks for companies that could merit indefinite ownership and cites a 25-year investment horizon. Its longest hold so far is 28 years, and Penn Engineering has been a holding since 2005.
What size investment does Tinicum make?
Its site gives a target equity investment of $50 million to $500 million. Recent deals include the $285 million purchase of Leggett & Platt's aerospace business in 2025 and the TriMas Aerospace purchase of about $1.45 billion that closed in March 2026.
Can the owner keep part of the company after selling to Tinicum?
Yes. Tinicum says sellers can sell completely or retain a share and stay involved in management. When it bought Tornatech in October 2024, the second-generation owners kept a minority stake and remained co-presidents and board members.
Does Tinicum buy distribution businesses?
Yes. Industrial distribution and services is one of its four sectors. It bought gas meter and regulator distributor KGM in May 2024 and aerospace chemicals distributor GracoRoberts in 2026, and KGM says it wants to acquire other distributors.
