What Altaris buys

Altaris is a New York investment firm, founded in 2003, that invests only in healthcare. Its website shows about $10 billion of equity under management as of June 2025 and more than 50 companies backed since it began. It works in three areas: medical devices and diagnostics, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, and tech-enabled services, which takes in healthcare IT services, revenue cycle work and data businesses. Its deals are usually buyouts, and many are complex: carve-outs from large corporations and health systems, such as Tegria from Providence and the life sciences data unit of Clarivate, take-privates such as Sharecare and Simulations Plus, and investments in family and founder-owned companies.

Altaris does not publish revenue or EBITDA ranges, and its recent platforms are large. A smaller healthcare business is more likely to meet Altaris as an add-on to a company it already owns. In October 2026, for example, Tegria bought CloudWave, a cloud hosting and managed IT provider for hospitals, and Chemical Computing Group was combined with Simulations Plus.

Greymont’s take

How Altaris fits a seller

Altaris fits owners whose companies sell to hospitals, health plans, drug makers or device makers and who want a buyer that already knows those customers well. Its platforms are large, so most smaller sellers would join one as an add-on rather than become a new platform. For an IT services or managed services owner, the clearest current buyer is Tegria, which Altaris bought from Providence in January 2026 and which added CloudWave's hosting and managed services business in October 2026.

Founders can stay involved. When Altaris took Sharecare private in 2024, the founder rolled over most of his equity and stayed on as executive chair. Altaris also tends to merge companies it owns, as with Forj Medical and Minaris Advanced Therapies, so an owner should ask whether the business would keep its name and leaders after a merger, and how Altaris expects to sell the combined company.

Questions owners ask

Does Altaris buy healthcare IT services companies?

Yes. It bought Tegria, an outsourced technology services provider for hospitals and health plans, from Providence in January 2026. Tegria then acquired CloudWave, a cloud hosting, cybersecurity and managed IT provider, in October 2026. Altaris sold Clearwater, a healthcare cybersecurity and compliance firm, to Sunstone Partners in October 2025.

What kinds of deals does Altaris do?

Its approach page lists carve-outs, corporate partnerships, take-privates and investments in family and founder-owned companies. Recent examples include carve-outs from Providence, Resonac, WuXi AppTec and Clarivate, and the take-privates of Sharecare in 2024 and Simulations Plus in 2026.

Does Altaris invest outside healthcare?

Its stated focus is healthcare only, across medical devices and diagnostics, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, and tech-enabled services. Two current holdings are less clearly healthcare: Analogic, an imaging and power technology business that now includes security screening businesses bought from Leidos, and Trean Insurance Group, an insurance carrier and services provider.
