What Berkshire Partners buys

Berkshire Partners is a Boston private equity firm founded in 1986 and owned entirely by its employees. Its private equity funds have raised more than $20 billion, and it now invests from Fund XI, which closed at about $7.8 billion in October 2024. Separate teams cover services, healthcare, industrials and technology, and a digital infrastructure team backs towers, data centers and fiber networks. Typical targets are worth $200 million to $2 billion and take $150 million to more than $500 million of equity, with headquarters mainly in North America.

Berkshire takes majority or minority stakes through buyouts, management recapitalizations and growth investments, and it likes companies that can grow by acquisition. Thrive, a managed IT and security provider it backed in January 2025, bought five IT firms that year. Triumvirate Environmental, which handles hazardous and regulated waste, took a growth investment in February 2025. A smaller company is far more likely to meet Berkshire as an add-on to platforms like these than as a new platform.

Greymont’s take

How Berkshire Partners fits a seller

Berkshire suits owners of large companies who want a partner for growth, including some who want to keep control, since it takes minority stakes as well as majority ones. Most founders will meet it through a platform instead. Thrive is the clearest case: it had made 15 acquisitions between 2020 and early 2025, then closed five more in 2025 under Berkshire's ownership, buying IT firms from New Hampshire to Michigan. At Triumvirate, the founder and his team kept their roles after the 2025 investment, and the deal created an ownership plan for employees.

An owner talking to a Berkshire platform should ask whether that platform is early in Berkshire's hold or close to a sale. Berkshire is an active seller too, as its September 2026 agreement to sell CPP to GE Aerospace shows.

Questions owners ask

What size companies does Berkshire Partners invest in?

Its stated parameters are enterprise values of $200 million to $2 billion and equity investments of $150 million to more than $500 million, mainly in companies based in North America.

Does Berkshire Partners take minority stakes?

Yes. It lists majority or minority ownership as normal options, along with buyouts, management recapitalizations, partial recapitalizations and growth capital. In its June 2026 Harbourfront Wealth deal, existing backer Audax kept a significant interest.

Does Berkshire back IT managed service providers?

Yes. Thrive, a Massachusetts MSP and managed security provider, took an investment from Berkshire and Court Square in January 2025, then bought Secured Network Services, Abacode, Baroan Technologies, VitalCORE and Worksighted during 2025.

Does Berkshire invest in environmental and waste services?

Yes. In February 2025 it made a growth investment in Triumvirate Environmental, which handles hazardous and regulated waste and offers environmental advisory work, at a $1.8 billion valuation. Its earlier investments included Clean Harbors and Casella Waste Systems.
