Buyers by location
Boston has been one of the country's main private equity centers for decades, and Massachusetts is home to firms of every size, from large buy-and-build investors to small teams that back a handful of companies at a time. Several firms on this page focus on founder-owned businesses, and some also back search-fund entrepreneurs who set out to buy and run a single company.
Massachusetts buyers lean toward the industries the region knows well: software and technology services, healthcare, business and professional services, and specialty manufacturing. Many build platforms by adding smaller companies over time, which means an owner with a modest business may be a natural add-on for a larger company a Boston firm already owns, even if that firm rarely buys a company your size on its own.
For owners in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and the rest of New England, a buyer close to home brings practical advantages. It may already know your customers, your labor market and the cost of doing business in the region, and it is simply easier to meet, tour the business and build trust when the buyer is a short drive away.
Location is only a starting point, though. Most Massachusetts firms invest nationwide, and many of the most active buyers of New England companies sit outside the region. The right fit depends on what each firm buys, how large a company it wants and how it works with founders, not on where its office is.
A useful first pass is to read each firm's recent deal list. It shows quickly whether a buyer is backing companies of your scale in your industry, whether it prefers to start new platforms or bolt on to existing ones, and whether founders tend to stay on after the sale. Every profile below lists those deals with dates and sources, alongside the firm's criteria and current holdings.
Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help New England owners compare these firms with national buyers active in the region and find the ones that fit their sector and size.
