What Building Industry Partners buys

Building Industry Partners (BIP) is a Boston-based firm, started in 2008, that invests only in the building industry. It backs building products manufacturers, distributors, lumber and building materials dealers, and specialty service companies that serve new construction and remodeling, both residential and commercial. It invests its partners' own money alongside outside investors, many of them current or retired building industry operators, and it often forms a new platform around an experienced industry executive.

Its stated size range is $10 million to $350 million of annual sales, and it will look at smaller companies with unusual growth prospects. It takes majority or minority positions and prefers sellers who keep a meaningful stake after closing, and it puts broad-based employee ownership in place at every company it sponsors. A smaller dealer, fence business, or cabinet or laminating shop may fit as an add-on to a current platform such as Southeast Building Supply Interests, West Coast Lumber, U.S. Fence Solutions, United Cabinet Holdings or North American Specialty Laminations.

Greymont’s take

How Building Industry Partners fits a seller

BIP suits owners of lumberyards, building materials dealers, fence, cabinet and other building products companies who want a buyer that knows their trade and lets them keep a real stake. Its platforms tend to grow by buying regional dealers one at a time, as Southeast Building Supply Interests did with Wallace, Haywood and Buettner Brothers in 2022, so a sale often means joining a group run by a long-time industry operator. Staff usually get a share through its employee ownership plan; at Endeavor Fire Protection, employees shared in the gain when BIP sold the company to APi Group.

BIP has not announced a new deal on its own site since August 2023, so an owner should ask which platforms are still buying, how much capital BIP has left to invest, and how long it expects to hold before selling.

Questions owners ask

What size companies does Building Industry Partners invest in?

Its criteria call for $10 million to $350 million of annual sales, though it says it will also consider smaller companies with unusual growth prospects. Smaller businesses have also joined its platforms as add-on acquisitions.

Does BIP require the owner to sell the whole company?

No. It says it is comfortable owning either a majority or a minority stake, and it prefers owners who keep a meaningful share of the business alongside BIP after the deal closes.

Do employees share in the value BIP builds?

BIP says it puts broad-based employee ownership in place at every company it sponsors. When it sold Endeavor Fire Protection to APi Group, Endeavor's employees shared in the result through that plan.
