What Cove Hill Partners buys

Cove Hill Partners is a Boston private equity firm founded in 2017 that invests in software and consumer technology companies. It has raised $4.5 billion of commitments in funds that last 16 years or more, which lets it hold companies far longer than a typical buyout fund. It makes only one to three new investments a year and keeps a small portfolio of about a dozen companies, most of them software businesses built for one industry, such as law firms, hotels, beverage distributors, K-12 schools or homeowner association managers.

Cove Hill buys control or a large minority stake, and it wants to be closely aligned with management. It does not publish revenue or EBITDA limits, but its platform deals are large: in October 2025 it led a minority growth investment of more than $300 million in Vantaca at a $1.25 billion valuation. It also runs a dedicated program to find add-on acquisitions for its companies, so a smaller software business is most likely to meet Cove Hill as an add-on to a platform such as Vantaca, NetDocuments or Incident IQ.

Greymont’s take

How Cove Hill Partners fits a seller

Cove Hill suits founders of established vertical software or consumer technology companies who want a patient partner and do not want to sell to a buyer planning a quick resale. Its long fund life and small portfolio mean each company gets close attention, and it says it will back a company for the long haul when that suits both sides. In the Vantaca deal, the founding management team kept leading strategy and operations, and an existing minority investor, JMI Equity, stayed in.

The bar is high. With only a few new investments a year, Cove Hill is choosy, and its platform checks are large. Owners of smaller software businesses should look at whether one of its companies is buying in their niche. Every owner should ask whether Cove Hill wants control or a minority stake, and how much say it expects on the board and in future acquisitions.

Questions owners ask

How many investments does Cove Hill Partners make each year?

Its strategy page says it aims to make one to three investments a year and is not in the business of doing many deals. It keeps a concentrated portfolio, with about a dozen current companies listed.

Does Cove Hill take minority stakes?

Yes. It invests through control or influential minority positions. In October 2025 it led a minority growth investment of more than $300 million in Vantaca, joining existing minority investor JMI Equity, with the founding team continuing to lead.

How long does Cove Hill hold its companies?

Its funds have lives of 16 years or more. It says that long outlook lets it keep reinvesting in its existing companies rather than selling them to put money into new deals.
