What TA Associates buys
TA Associates is a Boston growth private equity firm founded in 1968. It has raised $65 billion and made more than 560 investments, and it backs profitable, growing companies in technology, financial services, healthcare and business services, with a smaller consumer practice. It invests across North America, Europe and Asia. Most recent US deals are software companies (procurement, accounting, payroll and local government software), along with wealth and asset managers, healthcare technology and tech-enabled services firms such as Nous Infosystems, now called Artizent.
TA writes equity checks of $150 million to $600 million and is equally willing to own a minority stake or a majority. The money is often used to let existing owners take cash out, fund growth or pay for acquisitions, and founders and managers frequently keep a large piece. TA works through the board and leaves daily operations to management. With checks that size it is a buyer for large companies, so a smaller business is far more likely to meet TA as an add-on to one of its portfolio companies, such as FinQuery or Solifi.

Greymont’s take
How TA Associates fits a seller
TA suits owners of large, profitable companies, mostly in software and tech-enabled services, who want a well-funded partner rather than a clean exit. Many recent deals left founders and managers with a real stake: OneSource Virtual's founders and team kept a significant minority in January 2026, and Govineer's managers kept a meaningful share when TA bought out Peterson Partners in May 2026. TA also buys out earlier investors, as when Turn/River Capital sold its PairSoft stake in December 2025 and Halyard Capital and TCV left OneSource Virtual, so it often arrives at a second or third round of outside ownership.
For a smaller owner the realistic path is an add-on sale to a TA company: FinQuery and Solifi each bought smaller software businesses in September 2026. Owners should ask whether TA wants a minority or a majority stake, and how long it plans to hold, given that its holds have averaged more than five years.
Questions owners ask
How much does TA Associates invest in a company?
TA's approach page puts its equity investments at $150 million to $600 million. The money is commonly used to buy out existing shareholders, fund growth or pay for acquisitions.
Does TA take majority or minority stakes?
Both. It took a minority stake in Aeris in November 2025 and majority stakes in PairSoft in December 2025 and OneSource Virtual in January 2026, and says it is equally comfortable either way.
Does TA invest in IT services companies?
Yes, though it is a small part of the portfolio. In March 2025 it invested in Nous Infosystems, a product and data engineering services firm with US offices in Edison, New Jersey, which renamed itself Artizent in July 2026.
How long does TA usually hold a company?
TA describes itself as a patient investor and says its holding period has averaged more than five years over the past 15 years. Gong cha, for example, was held from 2019 until a sale to Bain Capital was agreed in August 2026.
