What Parthenon Capital Partners buys
Parthenon Capital is a growth-focused private equity firm founded in 1998, with offices in Boston, San Francisco and Austin and more than $10 billion of capital commitments. It invests in three areas: financial services (payments, insurance services, wealth and asset management, specialty lending and benefits), healthcare solutions (revenue cycle management, healthcare IT and payments, pharmacy services and payer outsourcing) and business and tech services (professional services, compliance, niche software, and IT and managed services). Its stated deal range is $100 million to $1 billion, and its latest fund, Parthenon Investors VII, closed in 2023 with more than $4.5 billion.
About 70 percent of its investments follow a buy-and-build plan, and the firm counts more than 60 platforms and 500 add-ons. It does not use operating partners; it backs existing management and often leaves leaders with a large stake, as at AArete in 2025. A smaller company is most likely to meet Parthenon as an add-on to a platform such as Payroc in payments, MRO in clinical data, DaySmart in small business software or Cherry Bekaert in accounting.

Greymont’s take
How Parthenon Capital Partners fits a seller
Parthenon fits owners of larger, fast-growing businesses in its niches: healthcare revenue cycle and data, payments, wealth management, insurance distribution, accounting and CFO advisory. Its $100 million floor means most smaller firms would join an existing platform rather than become one. The firm says it often studies a theme for years before investing and works through management rather than operating partners, so a seller should expect a buyer that already knows the market. Leaders often keep a significant stake, as at AArete in 2025 and Momentum Life Sciences in 2026, and holds can be long: it agreed to sell eSecLending in 2026 after 13 years.
Owners should ask whether the deal is a majority recapitalization, whether another sponsor will invest alongside, since Elevate was shared with Audax and Zelis with Bain Capital, and what role the owner would play afterward.
Questions owners ask
What size deals does Parthenon Capital do?
Its About page lists a transaction range of $100 million to $1 billion. Smaller companies usually fit better as add-ons; Parthenon counts more than 500 add-on acquisitions across its platforms.
Does Parthenon buy IT services or managed service providers?
Its expertise page names IT and managed services and data center services among its business services niches, but none of the active companies on its investments page is an IT managed service provider.
Do management teams keep equity after Parthenon invests?
Often. AArete's employees and leaders stayed significant shareholders after Parthenon's June 2025 investment, and Momentum Life Sciences' leadership team did the same after the July 2026 deal.
What is Parthenon's latest fund?
Parthenon Investors VII held a single first and final close in March 2023 with more than $4.5 billion of commitments, above its $3.5 billion target. Parthenon did not use a placement agent.
