What Jones Capital buys

Jones Capital is the investment firm of the Jones family of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, whose business began as a one-site hardwood sawmill in 1949. The family formed Jones Capital in 2018 to put its investing on a formal footing, and today it describes itself as a family office, with a second office in Houston. It looks for middle-market companies with $2 million to $20 million of annual EBITDA, a strong management team and a record of dependable profits, mainly in transportation and logistics, infrastructure, industrials, and technology and business services.

Because Jones invests as a family-owned firm, it says it sets each timeline around the company's needs rather than a fund schedule. It handles succession plans, partner buyouts, ownership transitions, growth capital and recapitalizations. Its holdings mix companies the family built, such as Jones Logistics and FV Recycling, with ones it bought, such as Dark Horse Electric, and its in-house Strategic Resource Group helps with operations, technology and marketing. Smaller businesses most often join as add-ons, such as recyclers bought by FV Recycling.

Greymont’s take

How Jones Capital fits a seller

Jones fits owners of family-built companies in logistics, recycling, construction and industrial services who want a long-term owner that has run businesses itself. Its team describes itself as builders backing builders, and its Strategic Resource Group works with portfolio management on strategy, operations, technology and marketing. The October 2025 Mid America Paper Recycling deal is a useful example: a four-generation Chicago recycler joined FV Recycling, its CEO stayed engaged, and it kept its name while integration was planned.

Jones does sell companies when it judges the time is right, as with Portabull Cold Storage to WillScot in 2025 and the 2018 recapitalization of Yak Access by Platinum Equity. An owner should ask how long Jones expects to hold the business, whether it would stand alone or be folded into an existing platform such as FV Recycling or Jones Logistics, and how management would share in the upside.

Questions owners ask

Is Jones Capital a family office or a private equity firm?

Both labels fit. Jones calls itself a family office with roots in a 1949 family sawmill, and it formed Jones Capital in 2018 to invest in outside middle-market companies much as a private equity firm would.

What size company does Jones Capital look for?

Its investment criteria call for $2 million to $20 million of annual EBITDA, along with a strong management team, a lasting competitive advantage and room for major growth.

Does Jones Capital buy recycling companies?

Yes, through FV Recycling, its commercial recycling and baler and compactor leasing business. FV bought Linn Paper Stock and Tupelo Recycling in 2024 and added Chicago's Mid America Paper Recycling in October 2025.

Does Jones Capital sell the companies it owns?

Sometimes, though not on a fixed timeline. Recent sales include Portabull Fuel to CR Fuels in July 2024 and Portabull Cold Storage to WillScot Mobile Mini in July 2025.
