What Benford Capital Partners buys

Benford Capital Partners is a Chicago private equity firm, founded in 2004, that buys and recapitalizes lower middle market companies, often from families or retiring founders. It looks for niche market leaders with $3 million to $20 million of EBITDA and $10 million to $200 million of revenue, and it will look at add-ons of any size. It works in four areas: industrial technology and manufacturing; food, ingredients and consumer products; agricultural products and services; and specialty services and distribution, which takes in testing, inspection, compliance and environmental services. Deal types include leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, corporate carve-outs and family succession sales.

The firm closed its third fund at $365 million in March 2025 and says it has raised more than $750 million in total. It owns about 19 platform companies and adds to them often: BSC Industries, Argus Monitoring Solutions and Heritage Pasta have each made several add-ons in the last two years. A smaller company is most likely to meet Benford as an add-on to one of these platforms.

Greymont’s take

How Benford Capital Partners fits a seller

Benford fits owners of family or founder-run companies, including those planning to retire, who want a buyer used to succession deals. It says keeping management is preferred but not required, and it often works with the existing team: it recapitalized CGRS in June 2026 in partnership with founder and CEO Eric Hick, and Geoscan kept all of its employees when it joined Argus. Benford's stated hold period of five to ten years or more is longer than many buyers', and it describes its debt levels as conservative.

Because so many of its deals are add-ons, an owner of a smaller filtration, bearing distribution, seismic or environmental monitoring, or food business may first hear from a Benford platform company rather than the firm itself. Ask whether the offer comes from that platform or from a new Benford fund, and whether part of the price is expected to be rolled into equity.

Questions owners ask

What size company does Benford Capital look for?

Its criteria call for $10 million to $200 million of revenue and $3 million to $20 million of EBITDA for a new platform. Add-ons to its existing portfolio companies can be any size.

Does Benford buy environmental services companies?

Yes, as part of its specialty services area. In June 2026 it recapitalized CGRS, a Fort Collins, Colorado environmental compliance and remediation firm, and said it would look for more compliance and monitoring add-ons. Its Argus platform has also added groundwater and remediation firms.

Will Benford buy a business from a retiring owner?

Yes. Its criteria list family-owned businesses and retiring founders, and family succession is one of its stated deal types. It says keeping the current management team is preferred but not required.

How long does Benford usually hold a company?

Its about page puts the typical hold at five to ten years or more. Recent exits fit that range: Droplet Measurement Technologies was sold in 2024 after seven years, and Brothers International Food in 2026 after about five.
