What Cressey & Company buys

Cressey & Company invests only in healthcare. The firm has offices in Chicago and Nashville, traces its healthcare investing back to the late 1970s, and says it has raised about $2 billion and backed more than 35 companies over that time. It works in two parts of the market. On the services side it targets areas like home care, hospice, behavioral health, multi-site care, animal health, dental support and supplemental benefits. On the technology side it looks at clinical software, compliance and quality tools, data, and revenue cycle products. It wants businesses that already lead their niche, run a proven model, have clear ways to grow and are led by an experienced team.

Cressey does new platform deals, such as Indiana hospice provider Paradigm Health in 2025, and growth investments next to an existing investor, as with ProgenyHealth. It does not publish revenue or EBITDA minimums. A smaller company is most likely to meet Cressey as an add-on: Activated Insights, HHAeXchange and Lifeway Mobility have each bought a business since late 2024.

Greymont’s take

How Cressey & Company fits a seller

Cressey suits owners of healthcare services and healthcare software businesses who want an investor that already knows their corner of the industry: home-based and post-acute care, hospice, dental and veterinary support, or software for home care agencies and payers. Its recent deals tend to keep existing owners in the picture. In the Paradigm Health deal, management and the prior investor Havencrest put money in next to Cressey, and at ProgenyHealth the earlier investor Sunstone stayed a major shareholder.

For a smaller owner, the more likely path is a sale to one of Cressey's platforms. When Lifeway Mobility bought Center Span in 2025, the founders joined Lifeway's leadership team and their staff kept their roles. An owner should ask whether Cressey would take control or share ownership, and how long it usually holds a platform before selling it.

Questions owners ask

Does Cressey only invest in healthcare?

Yes. Its About page says the firm invests only in healthcare businesses, split between healthcare services companies and healthcare technology companies such as software and data providers.

Does Cressey invest alongside existing owners and investors?

Often. In May 2025, Paradigm Health's management and its existing investor Havencrest invested alongside Cressey, and in ProgenyHealth's growth round that same month the earlier investor Sunstone Partners stayed a significant shareholder.

Do Cressey's portfolio companies buy smaller businesses?

Yes. Since October 2024, HHAeXchange bought Sandata Technologies, Lifeway Mobility bought Center Span and Redispan, and Activated Insights bought CareAcademy, each one adding to an existing Cressey holding.
