What GTCR buys

GTCR is a Chicago private equity firm founded in 1980. It manages about $45 billion of equity capital and has put more than $35 billion into over 300 companies. It works in four areas: business and consumer services, financial services and technology, healthcare, and technology, media and telecommunications. Its trademark method, which it calls The Leaders Strategy, starts by teaming up with a proven executive and then buying or building a company around that person, as it did with Avelis Holdings in 2026 and Maris Investments in 2025.

Most of its deals are large, such as SimpliSafe, the C$2.2 billion take-private of dentalcorp and the earlier sales of Worldpay and AssuredPartners. Its $3.6 billion Strategic Growth Fund II, closed in February 2025, aims at the middle and lower middle market with equity checks of $50 million to $250 million. A $1.25 billion Capital Solutions Fund, closed in July 2026, makes structured minority investments. A founder-owned company below that size is most likely to meet GTCR through one of its platforms, which grow by acquisition as well as organically.

Greymont’s take

How GTCR fits a seller

GTCR fits owners of sizable companies in its four areas, especially owners who are open to a new chairman or CEO, because the firm often brings in a seasoned executive at closing. FMG, Concord Servicing and Innovative Systems each gained a GTCR-chosen leader when the deal closed. Founders who want to keep running the business still have a path: at Tactacam in September 2026 the CEO and co-founder stayed on with significant ownership, and at Clear Capital the founder kept substantial equity.

The key question for an owner is who will run the company after closing and what role the founder will play. Owners in insurance brokerage, wealth management or dental should also ask which GTCR platforms are buying, since many of its recent deals sit in those fields.

Questions owners ask

What is GTCR's Leaders Strategy?

GTCR first partners with an experienced executive in one of its core areas, then works with that person to find, buy and build a company. Recent examples are Ascent Sports Group with Gary Swidler in January 2026 and Avelis Holdings with Brian Crotty in April 2026.

How large are GTCR's investments?

Its main deals run to billions of dollars, such as the C$2.2 billion dentalcorp take-private and the Worldpay sale. Its Strategic Growth Fund II targets smaller middle market deals, with equity checks of $50 million to $250 million.

Does GTCR invest in insurance brokers?

Yes. It agreed to sell AssuredPartners to Gallagher for $13.45 billion in December 2024 after a 13-year partnership, bought a majority of life insurance broker Winged Keel Group in January 2025, and completed the purchase of UK broker JMG Group with Synova in October 2025.

Does GTCR take minority stakes?

Sometimes. It made a $200 million structured minority investment in Solmetex in October 2025, and in July 2026 it closed a $1.25 billion Capital Solutions Fund that makes minority structured equity and debt investments.
