What Pamlico Capital buys

Pamlico Capital is a Charlotte, North Carolina firm that has backed middle market companies since 1988, first as Wachovia Capital Partners and as an independent firm since 2010. It works in five areas: software, healthcare, information services, communications, and business services, which for Pamlico includes IT services such as Protera's SAP cloud work and outsourced accounting through Your Part-Time Controller. Its stated target is a North American company with $10 million to $150 million of revenue, and it puts $50 million to $200 million of equity into each deal.

Pamlico does both buyouts and growth equity, and it will take either a majority or a minority stake. It says more than 70% of its deals have been a company's first outside institutional money, and it also backs search companies. Founders often keep a real stake, as in the January 2026 CalcFocus deal. A company below its size floor is most likely to meet Pamlico as an add-on: its portfolio has made more than 220 of them, including Redfig for Protera and Sligo AI for SpendHQ in 2026.

Greymont’s take

How Pamlico Capital fits a seller

Pamlico suits founders of software, tech-enabled services and healthcare businesses who have outgrown self-funding and want a first institutional partner without always giving up control. Its checks are large for the lower middle market, so a business generally needs to be well past $10 million of revenue to be a new platform. Several recent deals left founders with real ownership: the CalcFocus co-founders kept a meaningful stake as a new CEO came in, and the EHS Insight co-founders did the same next to a returning investor.

Pamlico also tends to sell or bring in a new lead partner after several years, as with the January 2026 sale of Personify to Momentive and Court Square's December 2025 investment in Avant, where Pamlico reinvested. An owner should ask whether the offer is for a majority or a minority stake, what a new CEO hire would mean for their role, and how long Pamlico expects to hold.

Questions owners ask

How big a company does Pamlico Capital invest in?

Will Pamlico take a minority stake?
