What Stone Point Capital buys
Stone Point Capital is a Greenwich, Connecticut private equity firm that invests only in financial services and closely related businesses. Its ten target areas are insurance distribution, insurance services, insurance underwriting, employee benefits and HR services, health insurance and workers' compensation services, wealth management and fund administration, asset management, lending and markets, real estate finance and services, and business services. The firm says it has raised more than $45 billion of private equity commitments and backed over 150 companies, and its tenth flagship fund, Trident X, closed at $11.5 billion in July 2025.
It generally invests $100 million to $1 billion of equity per deal, taking anything from a minority stake to majority control, and expects to hold for five to ten years or more. Recent deals are large, such as OneDigital at more than $7 billion of value. A smaller company is most likely to meet Stone Point as an add-on: the firm says its companies completed more than 100 add-ons in 2025.

Greymont’s take
How Stone Point Capital fits a seller
Stone Point is a natural buyer for insurance agencies, benefits consultants, wealth managers and other financial services firms, mostly through its large platforms. Its own checks start around $100 million, so the realistic path for a smaller firm is a sale to a Stone Point company such as OneDigital, which plans to keep growing through acquisitions, or Kestra, whose Bluespring arm buys wealth management firms. Stone Point is flexible on ownership and often invests next to founders and other sponsors: Gary Keller stayed as executive chairman after the 2025 Keller Williams deal, and Lincoln Property Company's founder kept a stake when Stone Point backed its succession plan in 2023.
An owner selling into a Stone Point platform should ask how any equity rollover works and how often that platform has changed hands; OneDigital's 2025 deal was its fourth equity recapitalization, and Kestra came back to Stone Point in 2025 after a period with Warburg Pincus as majority owner.
Questions owners ask
Does Stone Point Capital buy insurance agencies?
Mostly through its platforms. Insurance distribution is one of its ten sectors, and current holdings include OneDigital, Higginbotham, Alliant, CRC Group and Ardonagh. Its own equity checks usually start at $100 million, so individual agencies typically join one of these brokers.
How big are Stone Point's investments?
It generally targets equity investments of $100 million to $1 billion, though it says it can go smaller or much larger. In 2025 it made six new private equity investments representing about $3.6 billion of committed capital.
Will Stone Point take a minority stake?
Yes. It says its ownership positions range from minority to majority. In 2025 it led a $2.5 billion equity investment in Ardonagh as a significant shareholder alongside other investors, and it controls Ultimus Fund Solutions jointly with GTCR.
Does Stone Point invest outside the United States?
It invests mainly in North America and Western Europe. Its 2026 deal for Amber River, a UK financial planning firm, and its stake in London-based Ardonagh show it will back European businesses as well.
