What Nexus Capital Management buys

Nexus Capital Management is a Los Angeles firm, founded in 2013, that manages more than $5 billion. It goes after deals with a complication that keeps other buyers away: a division being sold off by a large corporation, a family or founder handing off ownership, a company that is hard to finance, or a business with too much debt. It usually takes control of North American companies with $100 million or more in yearly sales and enterprise values of about $100 million to $1 billion, putting in roughly $50 million to $250 million per deal. Its target industries are industrials, education, consumer brands and business services.

Its fourth flagship fund, Nexus Special Situations IV, closed at about $1.4 billion in September 2025. Beyond buyouts, Nexus can pair senior lending with equity, buy preferred stock or take a minority stake. A smaller company is most likely to meet Nexus as an add-on to one of its platforms, as when Laird Superfood bought Navitas and Terrasoul in 2026 or Dollar Shave Club bought Truly Beauty.

Greymont’s take

How Nexus Capital Management fits a seller

Nexus suits owners of larger companies, generally above $100 million in revenue, whose sale has a wrinkle: a family succession, a business being carved out of a parent company, a stretched balance sheet or a turnaround. It is comfortable with situations that slow down or scare off ordinary buyers, and it can mix debt and equity to make a deal work. Owners of smaller businesses are more likely to deal with a Nexus company buying them as an add-on, as Dollar Shave Club did with Truly Beauty in September 2026.

Because many Nexus deals involve restructurings or structured securities, an owner should ask whether the offer is a full sale or a structured investment such as preferred stock, how the purchase will be financed, and how much debt the business will carry after closing.

Questions owners ask

What size company does Nexus Capital look for?

Its target platforms have yearly sales of $100 million or more and enterprise values of about $100 million to $1 billion, with an average Nexus investment of $50 million to $250 million.

Does Nexus only buy distressed companies?

No. Restructurings are one of three strategies. Nexus also buys corporate carve-outs, does family and founder-owned buyouts and recapitalizations, and makes structured investments that pair senior capital with equity.

Which industries does Nexus focus on?

Industrials such as machinery and building products, education such as curriculum and testing, consumer brands in food, beverage and personal care, and business services such as marketing and information services.

How large is Nexus's latest fund?

Nexus Special Situations IV closed in September 2025 with about $1.4 billion of committed capital, larger than the prior fund, and the firm says it manages about $5 billion in total.
