What Rockbridge Growth Equity buys

Rockbridge Growth Equity is a Detroit private equity firm founded in 2007 by Brian Hermelin and Kevin Prokop with the backing of Rocket Mortgage founder Dan Gilbert. It invests in service businesses in four target areas: digital marketing and e-commerce, financial services and fintech, tech-enabled products and services, and digital media. Recent platforms have added technology consulting, insurance brokerage and legal dispute resolution. It looks for at least $20 million of revenue and $5 million to $25 million of EBITDA, and it usually invests $20 million to more than $100 million of equity.

Rockbridge prefers majority ownership but will take a minority stake with the right governance rights, and it wants managers to own equity. Its third fund closed at more than $360 million in September 2025. It also builds companies around an industry executive, as with FormativGroup and American Growth Insurance, which then buy smaller firms. That is the likeliest path for a business below its size range, such as a Salesforce consultancy or an independent insurance agency.

Greymont’s take

How Rockbridge Growth Equity fits a seller

Rockbridge fits owners of tech-enabled service businesses, IT and Salesforce consultancies, insurance agencies and marketing service firms. A company with $5 million or more of EBITDA could become a new platform. Smaller firms are more likely to join one of its build-ups, such as FormativGroup in technology consulting or American Growth Insurance in brokerage, both of which say more acquisitions are planned. The firm also offers ties to the Rock Family of Companies, a group of about 100 affiliated businesses it can draw on for advice and relationships.

Leaders often stay: Miles Mediation's chief executive kept running the company after the 2025 investment. Owners should ask whether they would be selling to Rockbridge itself or to one of its platforms, and how the eventual exit would work for any equity they keep, since recent exits include GSTV, where Rockbridge sold control but held on to a minority stake.

Questions owners ask

What size companies does Rockbridge Growth Equity invest in?

Its stated target is service businesses with $20 million or more of revenue and $5 million to $25 million of EBITDA, with equity investments from $20 million to more than $100 million. It says it will look outside that range when there is a clear growth plan.

Does Rockbridge buy IT services or consulting firms?

Yes. In March 2025 it bought a majority of Access Global Group, a Salesforce consulting firm, to start its FormativGroup platform. FormativGroup then added the data consultancy Eon Collective in January 2026 and the Salesforce firm Flok in March 2026.

Does Rockbridge buy insurance agencies?

Through American Growth Insurance, an Atlanta brokerage platform it backs alongside venture studio Atomic. AGI launched in July 2026 with nearly $70 million of committed equity, has closed its first agency acquisition and plans several more.

Is Rockbridge connected to Dan Gilbert?

Yes. It was founded in 2007 with Dan Gilbert's support and is affiliated with the Rock Family of Companies, about 100 businesses that Rockbridge portfolio companies can draw on for expertise and relationships.
