What Kaulig Capital buys

Kaulig Capital is the investment arm of Matt Kaulig's single-member family office in Hudson, Ohio. It puts the family's own money to work, so it says it can keep a company indefinitely and is not bound to one theme, holding period or deal structure. For private equity it wants profitable, growing US companies with at least $10 million of revenue and $2 million of EBITDA, and it writes equity checks of up to $30 million, more with partners. It favors high gross margins, low capital spending and strong management, and it skips venture, oil and gas, and high tech.

It backs several kinds of deals: owners who want partial liquidity or a recapitalization, operators who need a partner to buy a business, independent sponsors looking for a majority equity partner, and growth or acquisition capital. Many holdings are co-investments led by another sponsor, such as Gridiron Capital at Leaf Home and FalconPoint Partners at Jennmar. A smaller company can meet Kaulig directly, as Turnserv did with a minority growth investment, or as an add-on to a holding like Action Industries.

Greymont’s take

How Kaulig Capital fits a seller

Kaulig suits an owner who wants a long-term partner rather than a buyer working to a fixed exit date. It invests family money, so there is no fund clock, and it has taken both control and minority positions. An owner who wants to sell part of the company and keep running it can look at Turnserv, where Kaulig made a growth equity investment in June 2024 and said it would build the brands with founder Tyler Dunagin and his team. Kaulig also works through independent sponsors, so a sale may involve a second firm running the deal with Kaulig as the main source of equity.

Two questions matter. First, who leads the deal and sits on the board: Kaulig's own team or a sponsor partner? Second, how long does the family office expect to hold its stake, given that Jennmar, a co-investment, moved to a new majority owner in 2026 while Kaulig kept a minority piece?

Questions owners ask

What size company does Kaulig Capital look for?

Its private equity page asks for profitable companies with at least $10 million of revenue, $2 million of EBITDA and a record of year-over-year growth. Equity checks run up to $30 million, and it can bring in partners for larger deals.

Does Kaulig Capital take minority stakes?

Yes. It says it is not tied to one structure, and in June 2024 it made a growth equity investment in Turnserv, an Ohio apartment-turnover services company. It also kept a significant minority stake in Jennmar after KPS Capital Partners took control in 2026.

Does Kaulig Capital work with independent sponsors?

Yes. Its criteria name fundless sponsors that need a majority partner for club deals, and several holdings came through sponsor partners, including Curated Events with Blue Marlin Partners and Jennmar with FalconPoint Partners.

How long does Kaulig Capital hold its investments?

Because it invests the family's own capital, it says it can own a company indefinitely and puts growth ahead of an exit date. It has still sold companies, such as Phillips Syrups & Sauces to Lyons Magnus in 2021.
