What The Great River Company buys

The Great River Company (GRC) is a privately held holding company in the Minneapolis area. Its money comes from wealthy business-owning families, so it can own companies for the long run. It runs three active platforms today: engineering and testing services through Great River Group, fire and life safety services, and fishing products. For a new platform it wants a company based in the US or Canada with more than $10 million of revenue and more than $2 million of EBITDA, a record of growth and profit, low capital needs and a management team already in place.

GRC can buy control or a non-control stake. It backs owner succession, buyouts led by managers, growth capital and owner-led acquisition plans. It calls itself a generalist across services, distribution and manufacturing, but says its next platform is most likely a local service business that grows by adding branches, such as facility, infrastructure, commercial, residential or business services. Smaller firms can join an existing platform instead, as Construction Testing Services did when G2 Consulting Group bought it in January 2026.

Greymont’s take

How The Great River Company fits a seller

GRC suits an owner who cares about legacy, staff and community and wants a buyer with no fixed exit date. Great River Group describes a long-term, possibly indefinite hold, and lets member firms keep their own names, processes and leaders while it adds shared back-office support. GRC also says it gives managers real equity rather than phantom stock, and it runs its companies on the EOS planning system, so expect a structured round of 10-year, 3-year and 1-year goals after closing.

The firm publishes plain guides for sellers on rolled equity, asset versus stock sales and working capital, which is a useful preview of how it negotiates. An owner should ask how much equity GRC expects the seller to roll over, how and when that stake can later be sold, and how much say the current leaders keep over future add-on deals.

Questions owners ask

Does The Great River Company sell its companies after a few years?

It does not plan to. GRC says its capital comes from wealthy families and is patient, and its Great River Group platform describes a long-term, potentially indefinite holding approach, unlike a fund that must sell within a set period.

What size company does The Great River Company look for?

For a new platform it wants more than $10 million of revenue and more than $2 million of EBITDA, with headquarters in the US or Canada. Add-ons to its three existing platforms can be smaller; it does not publish an add-on minimum.

Does The Great River Company own environmental consulting or testing firms?

Yes, through Great River Group. Its member firms, including G2 Consulting Group and Materials Testing Consultants, provide environmental site assessments, contamination studies and compliance consulting alongside geotechnical engineering and materials testing, and the group says it wants more engineering and environmental firms to join.

Can employees share in ownership after a sale to GRC?

GRC says it offers managers real ownership rather than phantom stock, and Great River Group runs a long-term incentive plan meant to spread ownership across the whole leadership team, not just a few people.
