Private Equity Firms in Michigan

10 firms profiled · Updated October 28, 2026

Michigan's private equity firms grew up alongside the state's manufacturers, and many still invest that way. Firms in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and the northern suburbs buy industrial and manufacturing companies, distributors and the service businesses that support them, often with partners who have run plants and supply chains themselves.

Transportation is a theme of its own here. Several firms back trucking, logistics, rail services and automotive businesses, from collision repair to the carriers and service companies that keep goods moving across the Midwest, and they know the equipment, driver and insurance questions those owners face.

Home and commercial services are a growing focus as well. Detroit-area firms have built platforms in HVAC, roofing, specialty contracting and IT managed services, usually by buying established regional companies and adding to them over time.

Most firms here look for companies with roughly $2 million to $25 million of EBITDA, and the larger ones reach smaller owners through add-on acquisitions. Structures vary: most buy control, some take minority stakes, one pairs junior capital with equity, one raises money deal by deal as an independent sponsor, and another holds companies for the long term rather than on a fund's timeline.

A buyer close to home can visit the business easily, meet the team and understand the local market quickly. Still, every firm here buys outside Michigan, and plenty of active buyers of Michigan companies are based in other states. The better questions are whether a firm has bought businesses like yours, at your size, and what happened to the founders and managers after closing.

The profiles below are built to answer those questions. Each one lists the firm's announced deals from the last two years, with dates and links to the source, along with its stated size range and current portfolio, so an owner can quickly see which Michigan firms are active in their industry.

Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help Michigan owners compare these firms with national buyers active in the Midwest and find the right fit.
