What VantEdge Partners buys

VantEdge Partners is a Kansas City investment firm founded in late 2016 by Paul Edgerley, one of Bain Capital's early employees and a former co-head of its investment committee, and Terry Matlack. It describes itself as a blend of private equity and family office, and it invests only its own capital. Its focus areas are multi-unit restaurant and consumer franchisees, home, commercial and construction services, and industrial businesses, plus a stake in the Kansas City Royals. Current holdings include Dunkin', Taco Bell, Jersey Mike's and Nothing Bundt Cakes operators, a Take 5 oil change franchisee, an HVAC, plumbing and electrical group, a ServiceMaster restoration franchisee and a drywall contractor platform.

VantEdge puts $20 million to $100 million of equity into each new company, with room to add more later. It prefers control but will take minority stakes next to co-investors it trusts. Because the first check is large, smaller companies usually meet VantEdge as add-ons, for example to Wall Works Holdings, the drywall and insulation platform it owns with Boston-based AVALT.

Greymont’s take

How VantEdge Partners fits a seller

VantEdge suits owners of sizable multi-unit franchise groups and specialty contractors who want a long-term partner rather than a fund on a fixed clock. It invests its own money and talks about patient capital, so there may be less pressure to resell within a few years. It does sell, though: Allstar Services went to Morgan Stanley Capital Partners in 2023, with VantEdge keeping a minority stake.

The firm often leaves the seller in charge. JM Valley's president stayed on after its 2026 recapitalization, and ServiceMaster CDR's owners kept running the business after VantEdge combined two franchisees in 2022. An owner should ask whether the deal is a full sale or a recapitalization with retained equity, and, for a smaller company, which existing VantEdge platform it would join and who else owns that platform.

Questions owners ask

How much does VantEdge Partners invest?

Its approach page states an initial equity investment of $20 million to $100 million per company, with the ability to add more capital later as the company grows, makes acquisitions or goes through a hard stretch.

Does VantEdge own restoration or home services companies?

Yes. It owns ServiceMaster CDR, a disaster restoration franchisee in Ohio, Fountain Comfort Group in heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical, and Southwind in junk hauling, moving and exterior cleaning, along with the Wall Works drywall platform.

Will VantEdge take a minority stake?

It mainly makes control investments but says it will consider minority stakes alongside co-investors it trusts. Its portfolio page lists minority positions in Allstar Construction and Enjet Aero.

Does VantEdge own any auto service businesses?

Yes. VantEdge Auto T5 is a franchisee of Take 5 drive-thru oil change shops in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, listed among the firm's restaurant and consumer holdings.
