What Portrait Capital buys
Portrait Capital is a New York investment firm that buys majority stakes, meaning more than 51 percent, in family-owned and founder-owned companies in the United States and Canada, with some room for other countries. It looks for $1 million to $5 million of pre-tax profit and will consider larger deals. It prefers businesses with a lot of repeat revenue, a broad customer base and limited exposure to economic swings, in consumer, industrial, business services, agriculture and healthcare markets. Its capital comes from more than 70 founders and family business owners, and its structure lets it buy companies with no plan to sell them.
Most of its case studies involve owners who were retiring or passing the business to the next generation, including a tire recycling company, an international marine surveyor, a water well service company and an agricultural brokerage. Its one named platform is Affix Holdings, built from AAi Labels & Decals in September 2025, which is buying other family-owned label makers.

Greymont’s take
How Portrait Capital fits a seller
Portrait suits owners planning a retirement or a family succession who care about what happens to the company after the sale. Its case studies show two common paths. In one, Portrait promotes the next generation of the family into leadership, as it did at its tire recycling and marine survey companies. In the other, it recruits an outside leader while the sellers stay as involved as they choose, as at AAi. It uses modest debt, says it has no set exit date, and its principals make the investment decisions themselves, which can shorten a process.
Because Portrait plans to hold for decades, an owner who keeps a stake may wait a long time to cash it out. Owners should ask how and when their remaining equity can be sold or paid out, and whether a staged payout, like the one it used with an agricultural brokerage founder, would fit their plans.
Questions owners ask
What size business does Portrait Capital buy?
Its approach page targets companies with $1 million to $5 million of pre-tax profit and says it is flexible about larger deals. It buys more than 51 percent of each company and focuses on the United States and Canada.
Does Portrait Capital plan to resell the companies it buys?
It says it has no set plan to sell. The firm describes a fund structure that lets it buy companies with no intention of selling them, and it aims to keep reinvesting free cash flow to fund long-term growth.
Does Portrait Capital buy label and printing companies?
Yes. It bought AAi Labels & Decals and Sticker Ranch in September 2025, then added Guaranteed Labels of Moody, Alabama in July 2026, when its managing partner said the firm welcomes talks with other label company owners. In September 2026 the three businesses were combined under the name Affix Holdings.
Can family members stay involved after selling to Portrait Capital?
Yes. At its tire recycling and marine survey companies Portrait promoted the next family generation into leadership roles, and at AAi the longtime owners kept supporting the business after a new chief executive took over day-to-day leadership.
