What HC Private Investments buys

HC Private Investments is the private equity arm of HC Technologies, a Chicago trading firm, and invests its parent's money as a family office rather than from a fund with a fixed end date. It buys niche manufacturers in the United States that sell into consumer or industrial markets, such as food and ingredients, pet products, household chemicals, automation and process controls, aerospace and defense parts, and medical devices. Targets have $15 million to $75 million of revenue and at least $4 million of EBITDA, and it puts in $15 million to $45 million per deal.

The firm mostly takes control but can buy a minority stake, and it likes being the first outside investor in a founder or family business. It also backs fundless sponsors who bring it deals. Each investment pairs management with experienced executive advisors and runs on the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). A company below its size floor could fit as an add-on to Prince Industries, QEI or Artisan Bakery.

Greymont’s take

How HC Private Investments fits a seller

HCPI suits the founder or family owner of a profitable niche manufacturer who has never taken outside money and wants a patient partner. Because it invests family office capital, it is not tied to a fund deadline, and it can take either control or a minority stake. Recent deals show sellers staying involved: the former Snackwerks owner kept a large stake in Artisan Bakery, and its QEI and Prince Industries deals were struck in partnership with the former owner and the founding family.

Expect HCPI to bring in outside executives as board members or managers early, and to run the company on EOS. Its two recent exits, Epicurean Butter and Springboard, came after holds of roughly seven to eight years and went to larger buyers. Owners should ask who the executive advisor would be, what changes in leadership the firm has in mind, and how a rolled stake is treated at exit.

Questions owners ask

What size company does HC Private Investments look for?

Its criteria call for US manufacturers with $15 million to $75 million of revenue and at least $4 million of EBITDA. It invests $15 million to $45 million in each deal.

Is HC Private Investments a traditional private equity fund?

No. It is the private equity arm of HC Technologies, a Chicago trading firm, and invests as a family office. It says this lets it be more patient and flexible than a fund on a set timetable.

Will HC Private Investments take a minority stake?

Its focus is control deals, but its criteria say it can invest in minority equity. When it sold Springboard Manufacturing in January 2026, it kept a minority stake in the combined company.

Does HC Private Investments work with independent sponsors?

Yes. Its investment criteria list it as an active supporter of fundless sponsors, meaning dealmakers who find a company first and then raise equity for that one deal.
