What Providus Capital Partners buys
Providus Capital Partners is a Detroit investor that works only with architecture and engineering firms. Rather than investing from a committed fund, its partners put a meaningful amount of their own money into each deal, and they bring long operating experience in the field: one founded and grew the construction consultancy Cumming Group, and another ran a dental roll-up after years in private equity. Providus looks for founder- and management-owned A&E firms in North America with up to $150 million of revenue, and its 2024 announcement put its range at $3 million to $30 million of EBITDA.
It backs two platforms today: McMillan Pazdan Smith in the Southeast and Wold Architects & Engineers in the Central and Western US. Each says it wants to buy architecture or engineering firms with at least $2 million of EBITDA, and together they have announced seven acquisitions since June 2025. A smaller firm is most likely to meet Providus as an add-on to one of them.

Greymont’s take
How Providus Capital Partners fits a seller
Providus suits owners of architecture and engineering firms who want to join a larger practice without losing their team or clients overnight. In Wold's deals, the acquired firms' leaders stayed involved and branding was folded in over time, and at McMillan Pazdan Smith the principals of Jumper Carter Sease kept leadership roles. Sellers so far have been long-established regional practices, such as VPS Architecture, founded in 1960, and MCA Architecture, founded in 1976.
Because Providus invests deal by deal rather than from a fund, an owner selling to one of its platforms should ask who else is putting capital into the platform, how the purchase is being financed, and whether sellers can keep a stake in the larger firm. It is also worth asking how long Providus plans to own the platform and what kind of buyer it expects to sell to.
Questions owners ask
What kinds of firms does Providus invest in?
Only architecture, engineering and related design firms. Its two platforms, McMillan Pazdan Smith and Wold Architects & Engineers, design schools, healthcare, civic, government and industrial buildings, and both are buying smaller firms.
How big does a firm need to be to work with Providus?
For a platform, Providus looks at North American A&E firms with up to $150 million of revenue, and its 2024 announcement cited $3 million to $30 million of EBITDA. Each of its platforms says it wants add-on firms with at least $2 million of EBITDA.
Where are Providus's platforms buying?
McMillan Pazdan Smith buys in the Southeast and has added firms in South Carolina, Alabama and Maryland since mid-2025. Wold buys in the Central and Western US and added firms in Indiana, Tennessee and Minnesota in 2026.
Does Providus invest from a fund?
Its website does not describe a committed fund. It says the partners put a significant amount of their own capital into each partnership, which makes Providus closer to an independent sponsor than a traditional private equity fund.
